Road to Dakota full of idiotsRoad to Dakota full of idiots
Alert / Warning Thursday, December 31, 2015

Some jerk was snow boarding down the road. Then there are idiots that do not take time to put chains on at the start of the compact ice. Then there are people that put chains on the rear wheels All your steering and %80 of braking is on your front wheels chain up your rear wheels first. Slow down use headlights. Be prepared to have to stop on a hill. The road is narrow be prepared to stop and back up. You might be the best driver with the best rig and studded tires but it is the other idiot that spins out on the hill and is stuck in the ditch will get you in trouble. Don't be a brain dead useless idiot please use chains from the bottom slow down. If you get stuck it might cost $650 to get pulled out.

Snowplow blade glazing roadSnowplow blade glazing road
Alert / Warning Wednesday, January 06, 2016

Snowplow blades are like plastic sidewalk/driveway shovels. When new, they have a nice sharp blade that cuts snow off the surface. As they wear, the edge gets rounded and won't cut the snow. With the force and pressure of a snow plow, this rounded edge actually smooths and melts the snow surface. This instantly freezes into a hard slick glaze. It sounds like this is the problem on the Dakota road. Recently the grader used on the Diamond Head road near Squamish has been set up with a 'scarifier' blade, which leaves a rough surface affording good traction. No doubt this sort of blade is costly, but probably well justified for any well-traveled and steep narrow road. Still no excuse for unsuitable vehicles and not using chains.

Snow plows do not make ice spinning tires doSnow plows do not make ice spinning tires do
Alert / Warning Wednesday, January 06, 2016

Many vehicles are going up with out chains and use all season tires tires slip and polish the compressed snow into ice. The ice bar blades do not help much People using chains is the only way to drive safe on ice roads. Often it is not good to plow down to gravel as when temps warm up road can turn to mud. Driving in the same tracks as last 100 cars wrecks the road wether it compact ice or gravel chain up spread out your tire tracks. Diamond back chains only take 1-2 mins a wheel to put on and you do not have to move the car. If you chain up just at start of compact ice you help make traction for others to But ALL vehicles going up or down should use chains. Do Not blame the grader blade for polishing the road to ice it is people with out chains that polish the road to ice.

More on plows leaving a slick surfaceMore on plows leaving a slick surface
Alert / Warning Thursday, January 07, 2016

Snow man disagrees that blunt snowplow blades can leave a slippery glazed ice/snow road surface, and states this condition is created only by spinning wheels. Certainly spinning wheels can have this effect, but I've seen multiple examples of freshly plowed steep snow-covered roads with NO vehicle tracks on them, that were too slippery to stand up on. Wherever there were no vehicle tracks, the surface could not have been polished by spinning wheels. The only things that could grip on this surface were siped snow tires and/or chains. Scarifier snow blades, on the other hand don't leave a smooth polished surface. It certainly is not my intent to blame the problem on the plow equipment or operators. But should I refrain from mentioning better equipment because of the possible misinterpretation?

Alert / Warning Friday, January 08, 2016

I will be trying to plow the road plese slow down and respect other drivers this road is narrow. 20 kmp is fast enough road is iced up So chains needed. Please do not use cable chains as they tend to fly apart and leave you stuck or can damage brake lines. Diamond Back chains or real chain is best on front drive axle all your steering and most of your brakes are on the front wheels. Watch for people stopped on road chaining up or readjusting.

Alert / Warning Friday, January 08, 2016

In the context of full respect and no criticism for the volunteer efforts that make the 'Tet such a great place, and that keep the road open, here are pictures (taken today) of the grader setup now used on the Diamond Head road at Squamish. The serrated blade leaves a roughened driving surface, while the wing plow is a regular blade. This is what should be used for the Dakota road.

Alert / Warning Saturday, January 09, 2016

The best thing for safety for Dakota is use chains and spread out you tracks chains give you traction and help break up the ice. Are you going to pay for these blades. On Dakota those type of blades can play hell with steering on cars and even guide cars off the road. Using chains on front drive axle is the best answer and sand. But are you going to pay more to have sand.

Why are you even mention the Tet road are you upset it was not plowed to your satisfaction. As the road was just plowed for the first time on jan 8th. The plow blades you are talking about can do major damage to gravel road. Maybe Steve you should research things before you put your 2 cents worth in. If you do not like to chain up go to grouse they will cater to you.

Explore issues, donExplore issues, don't attach character
Alert / Warning Saturday, January 09, 2016

'Chains help break up iced roads'
Maybe on soft ice, but they don't leave anything more than scratch marks on hard ice. However if serrated plow blades help break up iced roads, then they're seriously damaging the road?

If there is proof the serrated plow blade is damaging the Diamond Head road, then let's see the proof. Yes, the grooves left by the serrated blade might divert a bike, but they don't divert automobile tires. In fact, the Diamond Head road is heavily used by mountain bikers, and I haven't heard of them complaining about the roughened road surface.

A possessive attitude toward the public roads in question (and even discussion of them), masked by intemperate personal attacks and accompanied by an abundance of advice, should not prevent anyone from making further suggestions. Suggestions which will decrease inconvenience, property damage and potential injuries -- or worse. Intimidating such suggestions is irresponsible. Anyone advocating that others do research should be happy to do so themselves, such as those interested in the winter maintenance of the roads in question sharing what they know with those maintaining the Diamond Head road.

As for the charges that I don't like how the Tet road was plowed, and that I don't like using chains, the writer is not responding to what is real or what I said, but what he has imagined. While his contribution to the Tet road is a greatly appreciated huge public service, it doesn't give him the right to dish out nonsense or abuse.

Stunning weekend up at Steele!

No one criticized you for how you do your work. Without exception, and including me, people are thankful for what you do. You should be proud of how you contribute to society in your special way.

Having said that, you must distinguish between exploring a subject and personal attacks. When I disagree with your position on an issue, I am not attacking your character. When I disagree about what sort of plow to use, it's an opportunity for us to discuss the subject. If you feel hurt by my disagreement, that's because you're mistakenly taking it as a personal attack. Which none of it was. And none of us know everything there is to know about any subject, including plowing roads.

However when you say in this public forum that I don't know what I'm talking about, say false things about me such as whether I'm willing to use chains, and insult me by suggesting I ski at Grouse, then those comments are personal attacks by you, on me. And I have no obligation to put up with that.

Resolving the best way to handle these roads is a safety matter. Peoples' lives can depend on it, as I believe you have said. You don't 'own' this topic and can't block my right, or anyone else's, to comment on the subject. It's an injustice and even a form of danger to shut down discussion of how best to look after these roads.

Tet roadTet road
Alert / Warning Monday, January 11, 2016

Please do not tow kids behind 4x4s on the back roads that are heavily used like the Tet or Dakota or road behind halfmoon bay. I saw a guy towing his young kids on sleds behind his unchained truck. If he had spun out and started sliding backwards kids would be hurt. Should let kids slide or snow board on iced roads It also makes it more dangerous as it makes the road very slippery. Lots of roads covered in snow off to the side you can slide on. These roads covers in snow and ice you can not walk up as they are so slippery yet people drive with no chains. Puts many people at risk

Tet and Dakota conditiosTet and Dakota conditios
Alert / Warning Saturday, January 16, 2016

Went up and tried to plow the Tet but as it has rained and turned icey under compact snow it took the Unimog more then a Hour in creepy crawler gear to get upto parking lot. Made one pass down hill. Have to wait till it freezes or snows more to plow more. It was Raining at lot but trying to snow I could see lots of fresh snow on trees just up from winter lot think it was snowing heavy at summer lot. Suicide hill was almost Bare but chains needed to climb Quary hill. For safety sake please chain up and spread out your tire tracks. Many places in the gravel road streams of rain water are carving away at the road.
Dakota around noon had more fresh wet snow about 6 inches trees looked loaded good sight to see but was just around +1'c and you could hear the snow in trees dripping and melting. If you go up with your kids best take extra Socks and clothes they will get wet Many kids were still out playing in snow soaking wet but having a blast Good thing woodstove is working so well. Road is very Narrow from bridge up and slushy and ice under many people made it with out chains but I will never make that mistake again. Looks like warmer weather for next week or so. Turn on those air conditioners set the temp to -5'c atleast get us some good snow up there. enough wet soggy stuff.
If you are going snowmobiling there is a posted trail across from parking lot around the Garage that bypasses the people trail Please slow down and stay of grromed trails. Keep speed down to well above the groomed trails watch for Back country skiiers and snow shoers.. Have fun stay safe.

The Pics is my truck studded winter tires and a guy stopped in middle of road solid ice under snow tried to go around him but ended up almost flipping my truck. Road is Narrow and someone could stop or spin out and block your way can you stop and back up on a hill coverd in ice with out chains.

Alert / Warning Tuesday, January 19, 2016

Vehicles with out chains got stuck and blocked the road again. Chains are required on your whells not just in the trunk. If you get stuck you block other people and it could cost you way over $500 to get pulled out. Some vehicles left stuck overnight have been Beat on or shot up etc. Chains are cheaper and Diamond back chain fast and easy to put on. Old style cbale chain are not designed for compact snow and hills they come loose and break. Make sure you have enough rubber tentioners get the spiders learn how to install chains down below where it is dry. Watch you tube videos on chain ups etc. Carry shovels dirt and snow a tow rope or tow strap . You might be able to pull someone out or they you. Slow down as the road to Dakota is mostly a single lane road. expect a car coming around the next corner or people stopped on road or a Zebra laughing at you. Have fun be safe.
