WHAT FOOLS GO TO DAKOTA NO CHAINSWHAT FOOLS GO TO DAKOTA NO CHAINS
Alert / Warning Tuesday, January 01, 2013

Road was blocked for 2 hours because of fools no chains and then 2 wheel drives going up spinning wheels digging deep ruts. around 15 vehicles had to back up from just by the gate to the parking lot at top as road was blocked and traffic at gate had road full. People driving to fast thinking it will get them up hill with out chains. But when you meet another vehicle and have to stop and back up you and everyone else is screwed. Then some people were just parking there cars in pull outs and walking up top. I just about got rear ended when some one driveing to fast in a 2 wheel drive doge caravan barely stopped when I stopped to let down hill traffic go by in narrow spot 300ft up 6km hill.
Then there are the fools that decided to just park on side of road at lot A and play around there . If a tow truck tried to come up he would not fit through.
Out of a 3 hour day up there we sat in traffic for 2 hours trying to get up there.
USE 4X4 AND CHAINS NO 2 WHEEL DRIVES SHOULD GO UP THERE Whats going to happen if someone gets hurt up at top and road is blocked by fools with NO CHAINS.

ItIt's not just a problem of no chains.
Alert / Warning Tuesday, January 01, 2013

Having also been stuck on the upper Dakota road this afternoon, I have to say that the problem was not so much no chains, as inexperience with snow driving. The first heavy four wheel drive truck could have made it up easily (most of the vehicles at the parking lot did not have chains), but drove right into the ruts and caught it's differential on the hump. Ditto for the next one, which also was a heavy truck with chains front and back.

Virtually no one who goes up there has a shovel, not to mention a metal, spade-shaped one to dig into hard snow. Neither does anyone carry any sand (not in short supply on the Coast) or traction aids.

So, a few hints learned after forty-five years of trying to keep out of snow banks in Quebec:
1. Please fold in your mirrors, it will give you another foot or so of passing space.
2. As the Snowman says, 'Don't drive in the ruts'. You lose control and risk getting wedged on your differential (what happened today, twice in the same place).
3. Chains or no chains, carry what you need to dig yourself out and something to regain traction after you've buffed the road to a high gloss spinning your wheels.
4. On the way down, use first or second gear to slow down: less risk of skidding than with the brakes.
5. Write a nice, polite note to the SCRD asking them to plow the upper road wider and as often as necessary (even if it is a holiday, that's exactly when the road needs to be clear). As well, suggest they spread a little sand on the two or three ninety degree curves where you lose all momentum.

Our 7 guys group ´d like to say thank you again! For great maintenance in cabins. We spent three nights in Edwards and Bachelor cabin, and we had very excited time, especially during this sunshine weather. Sure it was one of the most beatiful new years eve we have ever had! We walked over lakes, but when we checked the Ice by iceaxe and the water is wasn´t really frozen, It is just frozen snow on the top which is strong enough for walk, but still with some hazard. Hope we can more practice ski-alpine and come back to try it. We left money in the gas station.

Only use 4x4 and chains on DakotaOnly use 4x4 and chains on Dakota
Alert / Warning Wednesday, January 02, 2013

It only takes one person to block the road again. Glad I had chains on and a tow strap to pull guy out of my way and clear the road. If you can not put chains on your front wheels then you should not take that vehicle up there. Take the shuttle instead hitch a ride..

This is a back counrty logging road be prepared Only vehicles 4x4 that have atleast 1 set on good chains and use them Shovels very important you might have to dig out. A tow rope. Make certain gas tank full as you could get stuck on road for several hours. SLOW DOWN it is 30 kmph speed limit. and even that is to fast in corners.
The road is NOT SANDED

Alert / Warning Wednesday, January 02, 2013

I read this everyday, and I might stop because all I read is ' chains chains chains ) and a whole lot of crying. The people you are telling to use chains either dont read this or don't care so please enough about the chains. If they don't want to use them thats their problem, you can't make them. Yes I know it causes problems , but hey that's life, crying is not doing a thing. Hats of to the person who gave ideas for the people with out chains, no crying from him. So please let's hear about all the good times in the hills cuz I know there is good times, that's why we all go up there. Oh and yes I got 4x4 and chains.

Alert / Warning Thursday, January 03, 2013

It sounds like you only care about yourself. You know everything and can not benifit from others. When you get stuck up top for 2 hours because people do not have the sense to use 4x4 with chains on maybe you will understand were the rest of us are concerned. A few years ago there was as many as 20 vehicles stuck in ditches up and down the road. Now we are all posting use chains there is less and less problems. I will post everyday that you need chains if it prevents 1 person from getting hurt.

Thanks for your input I will flush it where it belongs. you are probally one of those that has chains but won't put them on because you are better then all of us.

To all that listen and do chain up Thanks.

Tet road will not be plowed Plow broke downTet road will not be plowed Plow broke down
Alert / Warning Thursday, January 03, 2013

Due to damage to plow can not plow till it gets fixed so it might be week or 2. Please Chain Up and spread tracks out carry shovels and tow rope.

We were up Dakota a few days and I can not believe the fools going up with out chains or 2 wheel drives with chains. Heard some people were stuck up there for a while because of big 4x4 no chains. You do not know what you will find around the corner or down the hill with out chains you can not stop or back up properly. Listen to reports Chain Up spread your tracks out. You might be able to drive up with out chains but if you have to use a pull out you could get stuck 4x4s still only have 4 wheels that have brakes like a car. Rubber and ice do not mix wheel under stress. 1 set of chains on front drive wheels gives you steering and 75% braking. Chaining rears only does little good.

I ended up in ditch 1 year with studded winter tires all because a fool stopped in middle of road if I had put chains on I would not have needed new under wear.

CHAINS NEEDED FOR DAKOTACHAINS NEEDED FOR DAKOTA
Alert / Warning Friday, January 04, 2013

Chain up and slow down spread your tracks out. If you do not want to buy or use chains take Alphas shuttle. If you get stuck up there and a tow truck has to come pull you out it can coast $450-$500 plus any damage done to your car.

If you do not have chains and hit someone ICBC might not pay your claim as there is a big sign that says chain up beyond this point at Lot B ( where the Bridge is) Rubber tires on ice make great skates but no control.

Have a tow strap or rop and shovels to help get stuck cars out of your way or you when you get stuck.

Have fun play safe

Tet Road and Park conditionsTet Road and Park conditions
Current Conditions Friday, January 04, 2013

Blue skies, mountain vistas, and endless powder greeted visitors to the park before and after the new year. Mt. Steele and Edwards cabins were left clean and tidy, with a bonus igloo at Edwards. The new vestibule and new outhouse location (with a view and a window!) at Steele cabin were a treat, as were the 12 comfy sleeping pads in the loft (thank you Dan Weinhandl and Deb Manning). The steep treed section between Edwards and Steele became its usually icy challenge, with large icy tree bombs falling all around as a bonus.

The road was in great shape on the 1st, and even better on the 3rd with larger pullouts and an excellent, even surface. Thanks again to Snow Man for his great and generous ploughing, and for posting the TOC website's warnings at the parking lot kiosk. And for putting up with road idiots.

Snow overnight on the 3rd changed conditions but will just add to an incredible depth of snow already on the ground. This is the most snow anyone has seen in this area at this time ever!

A huge thanks to all Tetrahedron cabin stewards for all their hard work, and especially to Steele Steward Sam for his great hosting of so many visitors from so many countries over the week. And a huge thanks to all visitors who did their part to keep these 'user maintained' cabins enjoyable for all.

Tet Road not plowed since Jan 30thTet Road not plowed since Jan 30th
Current Conditions Saturday, January 05, 2013

If the road is in better shape it is because people are chaining up and spreading there tracks out. This helps pack the road down evenly and avoids soft spots.

Many Thanks to all that chain up and spread there tracks out. To those who do not chain up you only make the road worse as you spin your wheels and dig ruts.
Keep up the good work and please post info when you come down.

Winter Route Lake CrossingsWinter Route Lake Crossings
Alert / Warning Monday, January 07, 2013

A friend of mine recently took a survival suit up the Tet, to see how the ice was on Tannis Lake (the backdoor entrance to Bachelor Lake Cabin), on Dec 24. He made it about ten feet onto the ice before cracking it and falling in. This was a safety/recon exercise for us, as another group of friends were to cross the lake the next day. We are happy to report that our guinea pig is safe n sound.
I was up Steele from the 28th-6th, and temperatures were very warm, causing the ice on the lakes to weaken.
Be sure the ice is thick enough before crossing these winter routes, or play it safe and take the summer trails. Just because other people have crossed, doesn't mean the ice is safe.
Spread your group out while on the ice, taking extra caution along the shore line, where ice is thinnest.
Stay safe. Have fun. And pay your cabin fees!

Current Conditions Saturday, January 12, 2013

Plow welding job broke hope to get new part from Germany soon. Road is best driven with atleast chains on front but be best if all four wheels were chained up. PLEASE SPREAD YOUR TRACKS OUT Very hard to plow road when deep ruts are jerking the plowing around.. If you spread your tracks out you pack the road down evenly and it makes it better road and easier to plow. Took 8 hours just to get a driveable trail in to Lot. CARRY SHOVELS FOR CAR AND TOW ROPE INCASE As temps very cold make sure you battery is good and have jumpers incase. Cold weather plays havoc with Batterys.
Drive with Head lights on Speed limit MAX 30 kmph Be prepared to have to stop at any time as road is narrow and no one wants to get off the tracks. Should be froozen hard ..
Do not Trust lakes as it was warm up there till just a few days ago. Ice has not had to to set HARD. DO NOT TRUST ANY LAKE CROSSINGS AT THIS TIME.

Alert / Warning Sunday, January 13, 2013

If you were at the Tet this weekend or during the week please let us know how the road is. My plow is broke but I am not going to bust my butt to fix it when no one posts any info on how the road is. If people chained up and spread there tracks out it would make the road easier to take care of but when deep ruts get frozen into the road it is almost impossible to plow. I spent 8 hours trying to plow and because of deep ruts plow could not dig down. Not to mention plow mount broke again.

PLEASE CHAIN UP AND SPREAD YOUR FREAKING TRACKS OUT. Please post info on road condition if you want it plowed.

The night of the 21st we will be at Bachelor cabin and then the 22nd and 23rd we will be staying at Edwards cabin. The group is 9 youth and 3 staff. We don't mind sharing the space of course but we have ruined a romantic evening for one or two couples in the past. Love the area and appreciate all the effort from people that goes in to maintaining it. Remember to pay the hut fees, they keep the place going.

Current Conditions Monday, January 21, 2013

With temps rising during the day the road to Tet might get soft and you could break through hard layer. Most parts of the road are 1 ft of compact snow and ice. Use caution carry shovels Use chains. Yes I said USE CHAINS. I bust my butt chaining up the plow to clear the road the least everyone can do is to Use chains to make it safer for all of us. By using chains you break up the ice and pack the road down better.
Please Use your Chains. Cable chains are only for Paved roads and do little on gravel deep compact roads. Best and easiest chains to use are Diamond back chains.
Watch out for the red stains looks like someone got hurt sliding down the road.

Do the snow dance no new snow in more then 2 weeks.

Skiing on the northern aspects (no sun affect) was pretty good both at Victor's landing and Bachelor Ridge. Snow base varied from 200 cm to 240 at Victor's landing. So plenty of snow. With the warm temperatures please be aware of 'Tree Bombs' they can not only cause Avalanches but can injure a person. Don't stop underneath trees as you never know when the snow will fall of the tree. Lots of people up in the Tet over the weekend.

Up at Dakota Monday afternoon it was sunny and warm--just glorious.

The road was in great shape. We chained up the front end and were the only 4x4 to do so. It probably wasn't necessary, but why not be safe?

We snowshoed Eagles Landing trail. It was hard packed with some softer snow on the sides. The view of The Straight of Georgia was interesting what with the fog completely covering the water.

A great day to be out on the Coast!

I have heard from several people they have had flat tires at the lot by the gate and up top from Nails in tires. I think it is most likely some Idiots having fires in parking areas with pallets. Please do not have any fires in parking areas as in can also leave a deep hole in the parking area for people to get stuck in. Use some sense do not burn pallets on any driveable surface.

And Please slow down on the road to Dakota wether you are on gravel or snow Many people walk there dogs up the road from the powerline and several have almost been hit. Many people park there 2 wheel drive car at snow line and walk up so SLOW DOWN please.

Alert / Warning Friday, January 25, 2013

Seems the inversion temp thing maybe over for now and normal temp seperation will be back. Chains a must on the road to Tet even coming down it needed 4 chains on. It is like driving on sand with a layer of ice under it. You have to give it gas to go down hill and hope the ruts do not guide you over the bank. I tried to plow but when the plow starts going sideways down a hill it is time to go home and hope for colder weather and fresh snow.

My apoligies to the Ipod people that feel they do not need 4x4 and do not need to use chains.

Tet Road soft like driving on SandTet Road soft like driving on Sand
Alert / Warning Sunday, January 27, 2013

Tried to plow but snow was no so friendly the hard compac has turn to like sandy snow you can drive on it till you give to much gas then you dig a hole, then it is solid ice under it.. Hopefulil colder weather will make it better to plow. But Plow blade will only cut down to top of ruts frozen in road. If everyone chained up and tried to spread there tracks out it would make it easier to plow. If everyone follows the same tracks I am afraid 1 4x4 could go over the bank and many others follow.
PLEASE PARK AS FAR BACK AS POSSIBLE IN PARKING LOT 2 vehicles parked almost in middle of Lot I could drive my plow around them Back in so you are pointed out and slighty down hill so when you come back you dont get stuck turning around. 1 guy left his window down with car locked hope he had his keys I unlocked it rolled window up and locked it up.
USE Chains not cable things with rollers on them they slip and tear Chain the Front wheels first
Yes I am going to call people who park in middle of parking lot a IDIOT. It is easy to get stuck up there and I dont want my plow to slide into 4x4s parked in middle of lot when I try to turn a 15,000lb snow plow around.

Tet road and ChainsTet road and Chains
Alert / Warning Monday, January 28, 2013

Proper driving on back roads in snow you need Chains not the cable things with rollers on the cables that slide around your tires.
Use Diamond Back chains they are easy and fast to put on with out having to move your 4x4. They look small but the squared sided chain gives great traction even sideways so you do not slide into the ditch. I saw a small suzuki on week end with 4 cable chains on and everytime he gave it gas he slid in to the sno bank and then toar one of the chains from spinning his wheels. You do not want to spin your wheels with or with out chains. You can damage your rear ends or U joints etc. Most of the time 2 set of Diamond back chains on front wheels will give you steering and braking. It will also break trail for the rear tires so they have some traction.

These guys did not use chains they called tow truck and paid $450 to get out. Put chains on before you get stuck Please

Bachelors and Edwards Cabin, Jan.21-24

Both cabins were in excellent condition. No mice observed in Edwards Cabin. One or two seen in Bachelors, but no food chewed through, and no bags chewed through.

Fire wood was brought up from the 'basement' of both cabins, but I was not the one who went underneath, so I'm not sure how plenty-full the basement stock was.

Both lakes were frozen solid, and we observed no melting on our routes.

Snow conditions were excellent, and we build snow-caves beside Edwards cabin with plenty of snow to do so. Even with the inversion the air was crisp, and snow stayed solid while we were there.

A great big, huge thanks to Cavin who plowed the road for our access and helped us get to and from the trail-head. Without his help our students would not have been able to experience the pristine wilderness that is in the Tetrahedrons.

Steele Cabin Feb 9-11Steele Cabin Feb 9-11
Current Conditions Thursday, January 31, 2013

Hello All!

I'm hoping to get a group of 4-6 into the Steel Cabin for the nights of Saturday, Feb 9th and Sunday, Feb 10th. (I will re-post with final numbers as soon as possible).

I'm a little confused about the payment methods though - the hut can not be reserved, but I can pay right now on PayPal? That doesn't seem to make sense to me. What if I pay, and then find it is full?

Anyway, if someone has any info about the booking/paying system, please let me know (604-366-1774 or mike.j.nell@gmail.com). Also, I don't see any big groups for that hut/weekend listed below - I hope I'm right!

A group of 4 or 5 of us are coming over from Vancouver to do a snowshoe into one of the Huts for two nights. I was thinking of Bachelor Hut but it looks like a group wanted to head there the following day. I've never been up this way though and am wondering what the huts are like and how likely it is that they could be full. Or possibly the hut is large enough to accomidate us all? Some of us could stay outside in tents or snow caves for the second night. We will bring our own stoves and fuel and will be sure to conserve firewood :)
