The Wednesday night ski on Dakota Ridge was beautiful. Clear skies and moonlight. Did not need a headlight. The trails were freshly groomed and fairly fast. Lots of fresh snow! The road is in great shape. Freshly plowed. I think I will go again on Friday evening!

Current Conditions Thursday, March 01, 2012

Road was plowed I still used chains as it has ice under layer of compact snow around 6 inches fresh powder at lot. They have moved alot of snow to make road wider. Only saw one other 4x4 up there on way down some nut in 2 wheel drive car was trying to go up I told him don:t bother. Saw lots of fresh critter tracks. Only around 3 inches fresh at 400 parking area.

Current Conditions Friday, March 02, 2012

Check out the great pics posted in earlier post from Avery and there trip to Steele. Please try to post a report after you come out from your trip. Also check
previous posts as some cabins may have groups going to them.

Large school group going to Edwards 3-4th and there is a group of 6 going to Steele. Also large group from Tet club going to McNair.

Road was plowed Thursday am It should be a great weekend up there. 4x4 and chains at least on front wheels. No Cable chains they only give false sense of traction. Best use Diamond back style chains they are easy to put on and give great traction. Use headlights on logging roads daytime and night. Carry shovels as you might have to dig out.

PLEASE PLEASE POST REPORTS AFTER YOUR TRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Road Plowed MondayRoad Plowed Monday
Current Conditions Tuesday, March 06, 2012

The snow on the road to Dakota Ridge was deep on Monday, but Snowman came and did a great job of clearing it. The road is getting wetter and soupy. Traction is trickier now than earlier in the season, so Snowman's advice for shovels, chains etc... is even more important now.

The trails weren't groomed as of 2:00 p.m. Monday, but it was such a gorgeous day to tromp around in the snow!

You have to thank the other guys for doing Dakota. I have not heard any reports of new snow on Tet road so I am only guessing when to go up and plow again. The Tet road is a 4x4 and chains road NO 2 WHEEL DRIVES SHOULD TRAVEL IT Please engage your 4x4 as soon as you leave the pavement it helps prevent chewing up the hills and loosening gravel making ruts etc.

Hello,

Sorry to abuse this Outdoor report form with a question, but I really want to visit (the tet and Bachelor cabin) but am afraid that my vehicle wont make it. My plan is to drive up the road this Saturday but, I only have a van with winter tires and two chain? Is there a lower elevation parking lot I can make it to and hike from? Or should I abort the plan. From google maps I would be happy making it to 600meters

Thanks

We used the Tet road on Thursday, March 8th. The road had about 6-8' of heavy wet snow on it. Even with a 4x4 and chains you could get stuck if you swung out of the beaten down track.

Had a hard time even with plow ruts made it very difficult to get uphill to plow. PLEASE CHAIN UP AND SPREAD YOUR TRACKS OUT. Was snowing in morning lots of freeze and thaw snow very unstable no traction. Parking lot sheet of ice under snow. The plow was going sideways down the road trying to plow.
Snow starts around the Bridge.
It would be foolish not to use chains.

Current Conditions Monday, March 12, 2012

Road is very icy above quarry: chains seriously recommended. 4-6 inches of snow/ice and ruts at the parking lot, but the road was clear up to there thanks to the usual exemplary plow work. Dusting of new snow on main trails: snow was wet at parking lot but nice and dry above the summer entrance. Broke trail for 45 minutes on the lower trail towards Edwards. Of course, today will change everything, but it sure was lovely yesterday with soft snow, dramatic clouds and the occasional burst of sun...

Current Conditions Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Hey Mountaineers,

You may have heard of us, Panhandle Explorations Ltd. We like snow caves and laughing and having fun. This weekend, six guys are heading to Mt. Steele Cabin for a birthday party (passing by Edward's Cabin on Saturday afternoon). Snow man, if you are reading this, we could really use some support! We are planning on driving as far as we can, but if snow eater can meet us at the bottom at 8 AM saturday morning and we can follow, we will compensate. Snow man, you may remember us from last year at this same time (four guys, small red car, chains broke exactly where you said they would: you gave us a ride to parking lot: we owe our best weekend of the spring to you). Please don't let us down this year!

Snow Man: If you are able to help us out, give us a call 604-885-7247. This would be much appreciated. We are working on the chains...
SNOW MAN is THE MAN.

Tet road plowed as best as canTet road plowed as best as can
Current Conditions Thursday, March 15, 2012

Road was covered in between 6 inches and 2 ft of wet soggy snow. It was raining very hard and warm managed to plow or pack a trail to parking lot but lots compact snow that might break through. Tried to scrape out some parking spots but plow had tough time. The snow is almost like wet concrete very hard to move. Be prepared for slush, compact snow and ice. Take shovels incase you have to dig a place to park or pass somebody.
There are many sections where the plow got flung almost off the road. Best to chain up well before you need them unless you have a lot of pushers. It is almost down to slushy gravel untill above the Quary hill. Best to make sure to park on a high dry spot incase melt and freeze comes, some spots in parking lot might have puddles of water under snow or slush. It might be a challenge and bouncy ride in. 2 days of warm and rain will change things alot.

looks like lots of snow in trees above winter lot I would think snow conditions maybe lots better above summer lot. Becareful around snow covered ditches and cross ditches could be lots of water under snow.
Have Fun and please post a report when you come out and pics too.

Tire chains how to put them onTire chains how to put them on
Current Conditions Thursday, March 15, 2012

Diamond Back or Alpine chains should only take around 1 min a wheel to install Yes they go on fast with out moving the car. If you put them on before you get stuck. Here is a link to a Youtube Video. I have noticed some people having trouble or putting them on wrong. So Check the Video out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shog...

By putting chains on your front wheels you give yourself lots more traction and control. DO NOT spin your wheels with chains on slow and steady works best. Spinning wheels can tear chains off and wreck brake lines etc.
There are a few different types some chains use a spider like rubber to keep chains tight others use a red chain looped through some chain loops and 1 rubber to keep tight.

Current Conditions Thursday, March 15, 2012

Hey Alix, capacity of the cabin is a strict 12 humans. Its not just sleeping space, but space in general, cooking and seating areas, etc. etc. But the Edwards Lske Cabin is on the same route, and better snowshoe terrain. Mt. Steele would make a good trip on your Sunday though! And be very cautious with the avalanche conditions. But yah, thats the reason our two groups posted in advance, to avoid having to turn people away at the cabin. Check out the Edward lakes cabin though, it:ll be a better snowshoe destination anyways!

Cheers,

Mt. Steele Hut FullMt. Steele Hut Full
Current Conditions Friday, March 16, 2012

12 is a full cabin! 16 is way too many, this would mean 4 people building a snowcave or tenting it for shelter and again no place to sit/hang out in the cabin in the evening. There is no where near enough room for 16 people to comfortably enjoy 1 cabin, would barely be standing room only.

Again the Edwards Lake cabin is on the exact same route just a bit lower down and makes a more appropriate snowshoe overnight with an ascent of Mt. Steele on the Sunday making for a nice day.

The trailbreaking up there is going to be a herculean effort. Please use your sense, read the sign in at the trailhead and don't head for a hut that you know is already full, just to have to be turned away.

Additionally it is fairly sizeable avalanche risk above edwards lake hut, so all parties should be trained, and fully equipt for avalanche rescue.

The mountain isn't going anywhere, maybe try for it next weekend if you're hellbent on Mt. Steele Cabin.

Hi all,

Thank you for the answers. It's actually our first time in the Tet and we've just discovered this website yesterday, that's why we posted so late.
Anyway, we won't take any risk and will sleep in Edward lake cabin, don't worry. We'll probably try to climb to Mount steel as that sounds the best part of the park but we won't go in Mount steel cabin..next time maybe.

Have a great trip there you guys.

Alix,

Sounds good, I think you'll find that to be a good plan, as from the winter parking lot to Mt. Steele Cabin on snowshoes with deep trailbreaking is a killer of a day. The trip from Edwards Cabin to Mt. Steele on Sunday will be a great day, I'm sure we'll see you up there. Feel free to come say hello and stop in for a snack! We really are a friendly bunch, just need to respect the capacity of these little cabins. Have a great trip!

Mt. SteeleMt. Steele
Current Conditions Friday, March 16, 2012

Absolutely Alix, it'll make a great day from Edwards Lake Cabin and from the top of Mt. Steele back to the parking lot its practically all downhill. I would suggest starting right early so you don't feel to rushed (quick breakfast and out the door), you'll be able to follow a broken trail and then back down to the cabin from Mt. Steele, finish packing up and head home. The distances and elevation gains are fairly modest, it will really come down to snow conditions. But leave yourselves extra time so you can enjoy the trip without feeling rushed. Nice part is having light daypacks and a broken trail to tag Mt. Steele and return to Edwards Cabin to pack up and head home.

Trip to the TetTrip to the Tet
Current Conditions Sunday, March 18, 2012

Left for Edwards cabin Friday morning. Had a hard slog on deep and wet snow going up the last stretch before the parking lot. Broke trail on deep snow with snowshoes until 2 skiers passed us after bachelor turn off. Pristine conditions with well over a foot of new snow blanketing the hills and trees. Realized around half way, that I needed younger ankles on the slopes before Edwards Lake. The lake was magical with only a single ski track to be seen ahead of us. Thanks to the guys on skies for marking our way across the lake. Found the nice and clean cabin and warmed up with thanks to approximately a third to a half cord of wood left. Joined by another friendly group of 3 for the evening. Top window was left open so we had to deal with the snow first in the loft. Thanks to Claire and Dylan who dug more than 5’ of snow out and made steps to get to the outhouse. Clear evening with fantastic sunset rays on Mt Steele and surrounding hills. Had a sunny hike out passing heaps going to Steele for the night for a party, lots going to Edwards and the cadets on the way to bachelor. Thanks to Flo and Chris for all the info and gear, so our first back country winter trip in Canada was a success. Thanks to Snowman for a beautiful plowed road on the way down.

couple items that need some TLCcouple items that need some TLC
Alert / Warning Sunday, March 18, 2012

In regards to Edwards upper loft window open, the reason the window was open is the latch is missing.

The custom metal handle lock piece is missing from the front loft door. And since the door/window can be accessed from the front ladder. To latch it from the inside may cause some one to force it open from the outside.

I will try and fabricate something for my trip this tuesday-friday

As well Edwards cabin door latch was missing a bolt and difficult to close latch. I managed to fabricate something and replace the missing bolt.
Steele cabin the front door will not close properly as the latch is misaligned with the door jam. So nothing is holding the door closed and it just swings open.

Bachelor Cabin UpdateBachelor Cabin Update
Alert / Warning Monday, March 19, 2012

The Seaforth Highlanders Army Cadets (from the Sunshine Coast and four lower mainland corps) over-nighted at Bachelor, March 17-18. We found the cabin in good shape, but were a bit taken aback by a group of four day-visitors on snowshoes who had brought their three dogs. The snow on the cabin sides was up to the eaves, so we dug it down below the window to give more light inside. We also shoveled the balcony/front steps. We sorted the outhouse - quite a bit of snow inside (without care the outhouse door stays sprung open - an exterior hook/hasp would help). The boys dug a great 2-3 person snow cave from a tree well about 20 meters to the left, front of the cabin (as you look out from the front door) - we left three sticks to mark it: check it out.

Thanks very much to Snow Man for the call two weeks ago to ensure our Pender Secondary school group was prepared for the road, and for checking in with our cadet group this weekend on the way up - what terrific service! We will try to get some pics.

Mt. Steele Cabin, Conditions, **Lost items**Mt. Steele Cabin, Conditions, **Lost items**
Alert / Warning Monday, March 19, 2012

We were one of the groups that stayed Saturday night at the Mt. Steele Cabin (skiers and splitboarders). We had a great trip overall, with good travel conditions, some intermittent visibility and sunshine, fresh snow, great skiing and great company.

Thanks to snow man for keeping the road in great condition, but to reiterate high clearance 4wd and chains are necessary given all the recent snow. We almost got high-centered at one point on the way up and it was slick in spots on the way down even with chains on.

The hut was in real nice shape, and there is still a good amount of wood remaining in the bin. We managed to close the door just fine, but maintenance of the door jam (snow removal) was required to do so, also we had to dig out the path to the front door to access the cabin.

Met a cool group of guys up there celebrating a birthday in proper backcountry style, including the digging of an impressive snow cave! We all had a nice evening, and though the cabin was packed, we all had a good nights rest.

Snowed about a foot of blower powder from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning resulting in some of the best powder skiing of the year on Sunday (though Saturday was pretty good too). Our exit plan skiing down the NW slopes of Hippo worked out pretty well, a bit of routefinding and double black diamond skinning found us to gilbert lake for an easy escape to the road, not a horrible shortcut, but not as smooth as the map might suggest either.

I'll post some pics ASAP

-------------------------

I either forgot my Black Mr. Chomps Splitboard Crampons in the cabin (we did a thorough check) or someone grabbed them in a bag by mistake. If someone comes across these I would be excstatic to get them back (lost just in time for spring touring, bah!) and would happily provide some kind of appropriate reward. You can get me directly at 604-862-1583.

Cheers,

James

PLEASE USE CHAINS AND SPREAD YOUR TRACKS OUT. If you do the road will stay in better shape longer. Driving in ruts is hard and wrecks the road. I spend many hours plowing the road and it can all get wrecked by everyone driving in the same ruts over and over. Even on the gravel try to spread your tire tracks out so the water does not run down the tracks.
It is tough to keep the road open and you can all help back packing down the road evenly. To plow the road I have to drive up the snow banks to widen the road. Don't know if I will be able to plow any more this season.

Current Conditions Monday, March 19, 2012

I would like to add to Jeff’s comments on the Seaforth Cadet’s Duke of Edinburgh Bronze level Expedition.

The weather was awesome on Saturday 17 March as depicted on the first picture (Final steps in a long uphill trek), the sun’s warming touch on my face was welcomed as we climbed slowly up to the first main stop at top of the hill.

After a bit of time learning the finer touches on Map and Compass (where are we?) we continued on to Bachelor Lake Cabin.

After settling into Bachelor Lake Cabin, clearing snow from the sides of the building, and constructing a 2-3 persons’ snow cave we went to sleep.

Morning came quickly and we noted the 10' snow dump that happened over night. This made everything look pristine. A group picture to mark the occasion (Seaforth Cadets at Bachelor Cabin) then on our way back to branch 500.

The trek back took us around Tannis Lake as depicted in the third picture (Seaforth Cadets trek around the edge of Tannis Lake) and arrival at branch 500 in 1 hour 15 mins.

I would like to thank a few people for their involvement in making this expedition happen:

To keep the road drivable it is most important to chain up and spread tracks out so road does get get all rutted. Pack down the whole road this will keep access open longer. I know it seems easier to drive in the ruts but that means the road won't get plowed.

Current Conditions Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Great weekend up in the park. One of the best birthday’s ever…
Awesome snow conditions and a full house at the Mountain Steele Cabin on Saturday night! Weather ranged from blue sky to white outs, but such is the great alpine paradox. Fresh snow, a raging fire, a whole bunch of good backcountry gents living and playing communally. Great times had by all…
Just want to put a big shout out to the Tet Club for their continued upkeep, care and commitment to the cabins. This is a great deal for $10 a night and it’s strongly encouraged from these locals that everyone pay their cabin fees! Mail it in, drop it off at the gas station in Wilson creek, leave it in an envelope in the cabin! What a great opportunity to have these cabins in amongst such a wilderness of beauty. Every dollar counts and helps keep these cabins available for everyone’s continued enjoyment. Thanks again to Snow Man and his sidekick, Snow Eater for keeping this mountain road as good as can be!

Just wanted to remind anyone reading, the easiest and most instant way to pay your cabin fees is online via Paypal, details on the Tet Outdoor Club website.

Cheers,

James

Take a good look around the ground floor of the Mt. Steele Cabin, I suspect they are in there tucked under a table or just out of view somewhere. I would be extremely greatful if you happen to find these, we can figure out a way for me to get them later -

cheers,

James - 604-862-1583

I posted a picture of what they look like.

Current Conditions Friday, March 23, 2012

Many thanks to Snow man and the amazing road clearing. With out his work on the road we all would be huffing it in.

As well the wonderful work by the Tet club on the amazing cabins.

Please remember to send in your huts fees to Tet club !! As firewood is expensive

As of 20th the road was 2wd able to chain up area. Beyond, road was in excellent shape but had 3-4 inches of snow. Did my best to drive on the edges

23 Friday on way out possibly 2-3 inches new snow. Upper road was in good shape but lower road was mushy.
One area had a recent vehicle go into the ditch, please people use chains. With out them you destroy the road
Friday 2-3 cars in parking lot with no chains :(

Broke trail on winter route to Edwards lake a difficult task with markers hard to find.
Edwards hut in good shape except for lazy and sloppy users. Door not latched, firewood box empty, no water left in pot, dirty soup cans, used tampons left in out house.
As I mentioned in other reports , upper attic window latch fabed and replaced.
Wood, 1/2-3/4 of a cord.

Steele cabin excellent shape and clean , thanks users!
As mentioned before door difficult to fully latch as it is misaligned to door jam. Lossed bolts and realigned latching smoothly for time being.
Wood, 1/4 cord or less

Camshaft out

James crampons located and hiked out.

Agreed, a huge thanks to Snow Man, this provincial park would be very poorly accessible without his regular work.

And thanks to Camshaft for locating and hauling out my crampons! Wine or Beers? And some trail breaking next trip! Sounds like you had a great trip, I can't wait to return to the Tet.

Lost people foundLost people found
Current Conditions Sunday, March 25, 2012

Some 4x4s got stuck and a search was under way for them yesterday they were found in Carren range area stuck in snow. Driving back roads in winter can be dangerous and snow can break though and get stuck fast.

Also 4 Snowmobilers were overdue sat night RCMP were just on way up to search parking areas at Dakota and Tet when they were found driving down from 400 turn off. They had got confused and lost in Dark and stayed put built a fire till day light. They were all fine, The back country can be dangerous and easy to get lost as deep snow changes the trails etc.

Let people know where you are going.

Tet Parking and roadTet Parking and road
Alert / Warning Sunday, March 25, 2012

I was amazed to see some nut parking parrelle to road taking up 3-4 parking spots in parking lot. Then other vehicles all up there with out chains and parked facing into snow bank. Most smart people will park so they are parked facing out so they do not get stuck trying to turn around.
1 pick up truck had cable chains on rear wheels. Some tracks of people getting stuck etc.
1 big 4x4 pick up with hobby tires drove up spreading his tracks out well often almost driving on snow bank to pack it down.

There is very deep compact snow in parking area that when it softens you will get stuck. Chain up before you head up on compact snow and ice.

If people do not chain up there is no pint in plowing the road.

Alert / Warning Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Dear snow man

I can understand the frustration to see a vehicle like the RAV4 parked like that. Obviously his vehicle is not equipped with chains. And possibly his concern was getting stuck parking in the normal fashion.

The main reason most of the cars are parked front in is to allow access to the rear of the vehicle. As well so they can park tight to the snow bank allowing the max amount of room on the road. My own vehicle has a swing arm spare and requires a 6' of clearance to open the rear.

Possibly adding some signage at the chain up area about chains are required past this point.
But please remember at Diamond head they have had to hire a baby sitter to make people put chains on. And possibly some signage coming into the parking lot on recommended parking methods.

Tet ParkingTet Parking
Alert / Warning Friday, March 30, 2012

Once you have gear out back in as less chance of getting stuck also tires will have chance to cool down and won:t melt into ice. If you have to get out in a emergency less chance of getting stuck trying to turn around.
Have a good trip Please post trip info after coming out. Much Thanks to Camshaft for his report and fixing things at cabins. Use firewood carefully as it is getting very low at some cabins. No More would can be brought in till fall. You do not need to load stove full of wood and have door to cabin open. Make the firewood last.
Please let the Tet outdoor club know if any problems or things need attention at cabins.
