Up at Steele over the weekend. Minimum traces of snow only once you get to the cabin. Trail was super soggy and flowing in some spots from all the rain. Beautiful to see the mist go scooting past Sunday morning with a howler of a wind. Wear gumboots if its been raining hard and the temperature is up, save your feet from turning into prunes.

Banff Film Fest Nov 16thBanff Film Fest Nov 16th
Wednesday, November 07, 2012

Great report from Cornbinder about there trip to Steele. The more people that post the better you can plan your trip. Take some pics and post ten too.

The Banff film fest is a great showing of a bunch of outdoor films. This helps the Tet Outdoor club raise money for the firewood airlifts and repairs etc to cabins. Join the club and share the outdoors.

Please post reports about any trips to Tet.

Interesting Trip, Mayne Lake TrailInteresting Trip, Mayne Lake Trail
Current Conditions Sunday, November 11, 2012

There was 1-2cm of dry snow at the parking lot, maybe 2-4cm higher up. We hiked to the Mt. Steele hut, arriving just after a group of 8 French-speaking young people with snowshoes. When we informed them our party was 7 people, the immediate response was: 'Perhaps your party should find another cabin to go to.' Not: 'We can all squeeze in, the more the merrier', or even: 'Perhaps your party could consider going back to Edwards Lake cabin.' I heard the word 'sept' used a lot while they conversed in French.

According to the log book at Edwards cabin, some other group had exactly the same encounter with the French-speaking group last year on the same weekend. Anyway, we went back and shared the Edwards cabin with an extremely nice couple from Sechelt. There were 8 people at Steele, 9 at Edwards, and 2 at Bachelor for the night of the 10th.

It was snowing on the morning of the 11th. We elected to go out via the old trail from Edwards Lake to Mayne Lake, then to Bachelor Lake. Those of us who had ever hiked it, had not done so for about 15 years. We had a tough time finding the start of the old trail, which actually forks east off the main trail just as you leave Edwards Lake. Instead, we made our way over the very awkward mess of the reclaimed road to its end, then bushwhacked toward Edwards Lake to eventually intercept the trail. This trail has not seen any maintenance for a long time and is badly overgrown and further obscured by deadfalls. The trail markers are mostly intact. How we itched for having some loppers, hedge trimmers and a chainsaw.

Very pretty light snow continued to fall all day. This hid icy patches on the main trails, making for some treacherous spots, especially on the way to Mt. Steele. The trail is sufficiently frozen that you don't have to worry about getting wet. Not enough snow for snowshoes.

We had lunch at Bachelor cabin, then continued to the cars.

We were able to drive to the upper parking lot, through a skiff of snow. By the time we drove down the road between the parking lots, this was more like 4cm and was getting slippery. The French party's vehicles were still at the lower parking lot.

Thanks to all the volunteers who did the upgrades and firewood work trips.

Current Conditions Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Hike all way to Steele to find you are not welcome that sure does wreck a great weekend. Think some people need a lesson in respect and Maners. Hope you contacted the Tet outdoor club maybe they can explain the cabin use policy to that group.

Tet Park etcTet Park etc
Current Conditions Friday, November 16, 2012

Glad to see some groups welcome others, and enjoy the park. Just a reminder that the road to the Tet is a remote back road and 4x4 and chains maybe needed. 2 wheels drives should not travel the road in winter as road is narrow and when they get stuck they risks others. The road is Narrow and speed should be reduced. Slow down before corners as someone else maybe coming the other way. A few months ago a young women was killed because of a 4x4 driving to fast around a corner and hit the Quad she was on parked on roadside. Do not stop in middle of road only stop where you are off the traveled part of road.
Get chains Use Alpine chains not cable chains. Cable chains will come apart if wheel spins and can take out brake lines.

Rubber tires and Ice do not mix well. CHAINS are the only answer to travel the Tet road in winter safely. They only take less then 5 mins to put on. No Tow truck will come and get you if you get stuck.
Have fun be prepared.
