So the road is icey above the 2nd quarry, although there is some crap on the road between the 300 and 400 roads. Use the chains. I did not need them but I did have to put the truck into bull low and actually use the throttle t9o avoid sliding. It was raining as of 1:30 p.m. @ Batchelor cabin. Mixed until parking lot, then rain. As in lots. Lloyd and I did trimming for better vis on summer trail to Batchelor. will put up proper markers soon, waiting for deeper snowpack.Creeks are running fast but not full.Cabin clean: Keep using it you families, this helps keep party animals out. As for the younger crowd, yes come on up, pay your fees and enjoy. but please take out your crap, and please don't run the stove full of wood, with the door wide open cause you're now to warm. Not all of you I know but some. Thanks, Doug House P.S. Boys, I can read the logbook. Have some respect and common sense,Please.

Tet Road is a 4 wheel drive road onlyTet Road is a 4 wheel drive road only
Alert / Warning Monday, January 09, 2012

The Tet road should not be driven with 2 wheel drive vehicles even if they have chains. The is plowed on as needed basis and often has deep ruts in the snow and ice. No Tow truck will go up there to tow you out.
Use headlights and select 4 wheel drive as soon as you leave the pavement. Using 2 wheel drive can tear up the road. 1 set of chains on front axle gives safety and traction. Not using chains can lead to sliding backwards down hills backwards. Road is narrow and you may have to stop for approaching traffic.
By Chaining and spreading your tracks out you will help keep the road packed evenly and open longer.

Hello Snow Man,
Question for you. Is there a parking spot somewhere on the road leading to the main parking area that would not interfere with ploughing or other vehicles? We want to make sure as to not disrupt the clearing of the road and further make it difficult for you to maneuver if we do park at the half way marker. Thanks for the info and thanks for making the Tetrahedron accessible.

BC Parks mapBC Parks map
Current Conditions Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Myself and three friends enjoyed Tetrahedron Park on the weekend of Jan 7th and 8th. We went in on Saturday and had a delightful stay at the Edwards cabin. Our mode of travel was both by backcountry skis as well as snowshoes. Using the BC Parks map that is posted on the TOC website, we thought we would return to our vehicle on Sunday via the trails that go from Edwards Lake to Mayne Lake and then follow what is indicated as a 'winter ski trail' back to the junction with the trail to Bachelor Lake and continue along to the access road. We followed trail markers, many of which are hard to spot, from Edwards Lake to Mayne Lake. Off the west end of Mayne Lake, we encountered a large clear-cut area, which I have now had a good look at with Google Earth. This is where the trail ends. Perhaps the trail continued prior to the clear-cutting of this area. With enough determination, ability and knowledge, one could navigate through the clear-cut to then connect up with the trial to Bachelor Lake. Just don't expect to follow any kind of trail. We followed a compass bearing roughly north-west through the clear-cut until it became too difficult and unwise to continue given the remaining daylight. We turned around and followed our tracks back to Edwards Lake and then back on the main trail to our vehicle, which made for a long day.

I have advised the TOC and encouraged them to advise BC Parks of this apparent error on the BC Parks map, which will hopefully be corrected in time.

Regarding the road, we chained up the rear tires of our four wheel drive SUV once we reached the snow and had no trouble going up and down. On our way down, we saw some skid marks into the ditch, which may have come from a front wheel drive station wagon using wire chains, which we noticed in the parking lot on Saturday.

I hope all these trips pan out, cause I am looking at a lot of fees coming in. Already we have used nearly one-third of the firewood that was put up.We in the west, during the late 70's and 80's, used to have a answer to our Ontarion cousins about them paying world price on gas and oil. Let em freeze in the dark. If you are unsure where to pay your fees for Batchelor cabin call ahead of time not when Isee you on trail, Doug House 604-885-5899. Or Pay at the shell gas station in Wilson creek, or pay on-line at TOC website. Have a great trip, should be some fresh snow this weekend.

Tetrahedron Road and Snow SuperbTetrahedron Road and Snow Superb
Alert / Warning Sunday, January 15, 2012

Yesterday, Saturday January 14 the road into the Tetrahedron was great and the snow conditions in the Tetrahedron were really excellent. There was up to about 6 inches on new powdery snow on the road, but the people using the road drove intelligently spreading their tracks like Snow Man urges. Chains of course made sense and it was a pleasure sharing the road with knowledgeable people.

There is not much snow once one puts on the skis at the parking lot, but there was enough to be able to ski down branch 500 with ease. The 6 inches or so of somewhat corn powder made the ski down as good as it gets. The highly variable cloud conditions as we skied into Edwards Lake made for an interesting afternoon.

Back country roads in WinterBack country roads in Winter
Alert / Warning Sunday, January 15, 2012

4x4 and Chains a must along with shovels warm clothes and footwear. Assume you might have to walk out. Have full tank of gas. I have seen so many people up at Dakota stuck in ditch and they have less then 1/4 tank of gas. Try the chains on before heading up the hills. Drive slow as roads are narrow and there might be a fast moving 4x4 coming at you. Drive with headlights as they will help others spot you sooner.
DO NOT STOP IN MIDDLE OF ROAD TO CHAIN UP Find a wide spot and be aware of other vehicles using the road. Stay off the breaks as much as possible use lower gears to slow down.

Hi All
Just got back from an overnight with our senior Scouts (Venturer Scouts). We chained up at the first snow on the road and had an uneventful drive up. There were 2 other vehicles in the parking lot when we arrived at around 9 am. It was snowing quite heavily for most of our snowshoe trek to Edwards Lake cabin. On our way we met Doug and Lloyd and a group of 3 heading to Batchelor. We spaced ourselves out and crossed Edwards Lake. The cabin was in great condition....nice and clean. We did see a mouse that evening though. In the morning, the sky was blue and there was a foot of fresh powder. We had a great trip back. On the drive down the tracks were well spread out. The road is in good condition.

Bachelor Trip Report Jan 13-16Bachelor Trip Report Jan 13-16
Current Conditions Monday, January 16, 2012

The road conditions to the final crux hill 700 m or so from the lower parking were very good. It's been a couple years since I last drove this road and someone has done a great job decommissioning the decommissioning ditches, I saw some recent gravel laid down too. The final steep pitch was solid ice full across the road, all the way to the lower parking lot. A pair of chains was all it took to conquer it, and the fresh snow on Saturday made it possible for vehicles to make it up without throwing on chains.

The new smaller stove in Bachelor fulfills its role of conserving wood perfectly. The cabin never got beyond ‘slightly warm’ and there is a great hot spot between the stove and the reflector if you need to really warm up.

A few parties came by on day trips. Some managed to spin an entertaining yarn or two before descending back down.

We stayed off the lakes on Friday, the snow level was so low, and it didn’t look like the area had seen much freezing. The recent snowfall and falling of temperatures should increase the level of safety, but don’t take my word for it! Do your own due diligence.

We left the cabin spotless as we found it, didn’t have visits from any critters, furry, winged or masked.

Batchelor lake and RidgeBatchelor lake and Ridge
Current Conditions Monday, January 16, 2012

the road up to the winter parking lot was easily travelled. a few inches of fresh snow and gave lots of traction. chains weren't necessary although we carried them. used 4H just in case. checked out the slope just past Victor's Landing to practise some tele turns on but there is still only about 2 feet of snow, lots of stumps and holes showing so we didn't stick around. Backtracked to Victor's Landing and followed the old road along to the 'back door' of Batchelor and skied down through the trees. lots of holes and open creeks still.
after lunch went across the lake and up and over Batchelor Ridge and back along the old logging road to the Y junction.
lots of open creeks and alder bushes still showing so there really isn't much snow yet for this time of year. road still good going down at 3pm and didn't need to chain up.
Snowman doing an excellent job with the road.
snowing lightly when we descended.

Current Conditions Friday, January 27, 2012

Went up to Bachelor Lake Thursday and came down Friday. Conditions were great. Lots of new snow. Cabin was in excellent condition: very clean with the firewood box full and kindling cut (thanks to those before us).

Used chains going up and down in our Jeep and didn't have any problems, but snow was very deep near the top. Thanks to Al Fischer and the Sunshine Coast Snow-seekers for plowing the road on the way up. Real nice bunch of guys and doing it all on a volunteer basis! ..and thanks to the Snowman for all the times you do it as well. Tried our best to spread our tracks, but snow was very deep (2-3 feet) outside of the tracks.

On the way down, the steep hill about 600 meters before the parking lot had become hard packed and icy, however, I saw two vehicles make it up without chains (but I wouldn't recommend it). The hill that starts at the 'Chain up here' sign was also becoming icy

Paid our cabin fees at the Shell station on the way home. Thanks again to the Tet Club for all the work you do to make this such a great destination

Tet Conditions what weather concernsTet Conditions what weather concerns
Current Conditions Saturday, January 28, 2012

Gary I'm sorry if we made anyone miss out on heading up due to our failed intentions. Know that there was another group of 8 from the BCMC that had also planned to be at the Cabin this weekend as well.

Our specific weather concerns were based on the recommendations of the Canadian avalanche centers bulletin for the North Shore (as we consider this the closest relevant avi area). The rating was High for both below and at the treeline on Sunday. We intended to get some skiing in but with the freezing level rising and forecasts for heavy precipitation from yr.no for mount steele we made a judgement call that it was beyond our comfort.

I also hope that more people post on the reports page as it helps everyone in planning. I also tried to make contact with a member from the TOC about last weekends trip but received no response to my email.

Very icy road to Dakota RidgeVery icy road to Dakota Ridge
Alert / Warning Sunday, January 29, 2012

we passed several vehicles coming back down at 9:30am. Apparently the road was a sheet of ice further up and even 4x4s with chains were sliding down sideways:-( We turned around too.

Dakota Ridge road is icy with rainDakota Ridge road is icy with rain
Current Conditions Sunday, January 29, 2012

The road is very icy with rain running on top of it. I had my van in 4wd but hadn't put chains on at the 5km mark and went into the ditch. I had to be pulled out.

I would suggest chaining up at 3km. Make sure you have some momentum when going up the hills. They are very slick.

Hit snow around 3kms on road. Freshly ploughed Saturday am.
Drove to top without having to put the chains on - thank you Cavin. Cross ditches now snowbridged nicely. About 2 feet new snow last 7 days at Victor's Landing. Edwards Lake solid. Easy crossing Steele Creek on snow bridge. Lots new snow in the bowl halfway up Steele.
Edwards cabin found clean and tidy. Cabins are seeing lots of use but the wood supply is holding out. Please don't burn the wood just to heat your soup - use backpacking stoves.
Despite lots of new snow there was no evidence of slides or sloughs. Stick to the ridges where possible.

Dear snow man, a BIG thank you for plowing the road on Saturday,January 28th. It made the trip up great.

The Edwards cabin was still clean, warm and cozy from the SAR folks - thanks!

The trip down on Sunday the 29th 1:30 pm was icy with chains, we took our time and got down safely.
