AVALANCHE WARNINGAVALANCHE WARNING
Alert / Warning Friday, March 12, 2010

Special Avalanche Warning for BC’s South Columbia Mountains, Kootenay-Boundary and Southern Chilcotin Mountains

First real storm in eight weeks predicted to bring heavy snow to a weak snowpack

March 11, 2010, Revelstoke, BC: The Canadian Avalanche Centre is issuing a special avalanche warning for the southern Selkirk and Monashee Mountains, the Kootenay-Boundary area, and the Southern Chilcotin Mountains. This warning is in effect for this coming weekend, Saturday March 13 and Sunday March 14. For a map of the affected areas, please go to: avalanche.ca/cac/bulletin/region-map/spaw-map.

BC’s southern interior is forecast to receive its first real snow storm in almost eight weeks. The avalanche danger will be caused by storm snow overloading weak layers in the upper snowpack, explains CAC Avalanche Forecaster Greg Johnson. “We have been tracking these weak layers since they formed in late January and in a normal winter they would be history by now,” says Johnson. “But with the lack of snow we’ve had this year, these layers are remaining very active and backcountry users are triggering avalanches fairly regularly. We’ve had a lot of close calls recently and, although this new snow will be tempting, the avalanche conditions in these areas will be very dangerous.”

The CAC has compiled an online photo album of recent avalanches triggered on the same weak layers identified in this warning. This resource can be found here: avalanche.ca/cac/march2010. Up to date information about avalanche safety, education, and conditions is always available at: avalanche.ca.

Over 24' of new snow will greet you when you go to the ridge! It was -4c this morning when we start to groom and it warmed-up in the afternoon. Fellow skiers, you better go up and enjoy the ridge as it is the last weekend of operation.

Great DayGreat Day
Current Conditions Sunday, March 14, 2010

We got up to Dakota early today. The road has been plowed and is in good condition. There is lots of fresh snow and it has been groomed. Conditions are great. It was snowing heavily around one o'clock when we left.
People were talking about the damage to the trails that had been done by some quads last night :-( The groomer had to work hard to fix it.

HOLY $#!%!!!!!HOLY $#!%!!!!!
Current Conditions Wednesday, March 17, 2010

We just spent the weekend up at Edwards/Steele cabins. Probably snowed 3 or 4 four feet while we were up there. Ran in to four other skier guys who treated us with a 'meat sauna' the second night (not as gross as it sounds but almost). Seemed a little sketchy getting out with all the heavy new snow lower down. Looks like a good base for some spring conditions when the sun comes out. Nice job on the Steele cabin renos, was a lot warmer then even the Edwards cabin. The donations are on the way. Oh yeah, road is no problem if you have four wheel with decent tires or chains.
Thanks snowman.

Great trip to the cabin. Left friday afternoon, snow conditions were alright. Took shortcut at Edwards lake, came out on trail 200 yds from bridge. Cabin was a nice sight at the end, very clean an tidy. Played on saturday, hiked to Hind-Smith lake, beautiful. There was about 12 feet of snow, cabin half buried. Rained on us sat. night, we left early sunday, avoided the lakes and stuck to the trail. Had lunch at Edwards cabin, half the amount of snow. Anyways great time up there, Thanks TET club.

How is the Road up to the Tet? I've been asked to drive the enthusiastic young mountaineers up on Friday. I've got chains, 9' ground clearance, but prefer not to go skiing while behind the steering wheel of a car.

Great day at Dakota RidgeGreat day at Dakota Ridge
Current Conditions Thursday, March 25, 2010

Wednesday Mar. 24 was a great sunny day at 'the Ridge.' The snow was soft on top but consistent. We spent most of our time north of the trails, but had a good ski around the east loop at the end. The snowfall mid March has sure made things better. It is great the SCRD has kept operating til end of March. Be prepared for muddy parking lot.

Tet RoadTet Road
Current Conditions Thursday, March 25, 2010

Going by the wether conditions the Tet road should be Bare or comapct to winter lot. I have heard no reports of fresh snow on Road since it was plowed 2 weeks ago.

Since the Olympics are over Enviro Canada has taken the 2010 weather sites off line. There is a chance we could loose our Local Sechelt weather station as it was set up for the Olympics. If we loose our local weather station it would mean all Sechelt weather info would come from Pt Atkinson in west Van.

Please post any info you might have on conditions to Tet and dakota.
This site works well when people share info. if you come down from Tet please post info on road and trails snow etc.

Local Weather Station could be closed soonLocal Weather Station could be closed soon
Current Conditions Monday, March 29, 2010

I just read that our local weather Station which was set up for helping to predict the olympic weather may only stay online till end of 2010. We are lucky all the other weather stations have been shut down. Up untill we had this station all Sechelt weather came from Point Atkinson in West Van which is much cooler and gets more rain then Sechelt. All Enviro Canada wants to keep a local weather station here is that there is interest to keep it and some help with operating costs from local Govt.
I ask anyone who wants to see our local weather station to stay put to email Enviro Can, District of Sechelt and SCRD. There is often as much as 6'c differance in summer temps from west Van and Sechelt. Sechelt is the only Station still running that was set up for the Olympics. There is a big gap on this side of Georgia Strait for weather info.

Dakota closingDakota closing
Current Conditions Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Just spoke with the SCRD-- Dakota is 'closed' as of today. They did a final grooming this morning, but have locked the gate at the overflow parking lot (about 200 meters from the top). The warming hut has been locked and all signage removed.

The good news is there is snow starting at Lot A- so still great for snowshoeing and skiing.

The road has been plowed, so the snow on the road is hard and compact. As always, be prepared with 4WD and chains.

SCRD doesn't plan on blocking it at Lot B unless people start mis-using the area (vandalism, etc) or the road gets really soggy from the snow melting.

We'll still be renting snowshoes and cross country skis, so come on by on your way up!
