Current Conditions Friday, January 01, 2010

4:30 pm- Dec. 31. Snowing heavily on Dakota. Snowline begins just below lot A. Significant snow on the road at lot b.

We saw vehicles struggling again and sliding off the road. 4X4 / chains are recommended.

Looks like it will be an awesome snowy New Year's Day on Dakota.

Happy New Year!

Current Conditions Sunday, January 03, 2010

The road is in great shape all the way up as of 2 p.m. Jan. 2. Some icy patches as rain froze on the road. Still take chains. Weather yesterday was light rain with some wet flurries. Went to Batchelor cabin with three members for lunch, and circled out via Victors Landing. We didn't trust the ice on either Tannis or Batchelor lakes.About ten vehicles in the parking lot. People have been using Batchelor cabin and keeping it clean, firewood supply is gettig low,so use it sparingly.

Current Conditions Sunday, January 03, 2010

Great day on the Ridge - lots of folks using the area. Hovered around 0 - no new snow today.

Road is clear- compact ice for the last 1 km.

Great job by the groomers today.

Please remember to pay the trail / access fees. That is what helps to cover the fuel for the groomer, the road plowing, the upkeep of the warming hut, etc.

Current Conditions Friday, January 08, 2010

Just heard they had around 20 people up skiing on wed night They said it was fast skiing and temps were just below freezing. Maybe Night skiing is best for now as night temps come down.

Please post a report if you have been up to Dakota or Tet. Things like snow depths and temps trail and road conditions help others plan there trips.

RainRain
Current Conditions Friday, January 08, 2010

Went up today to do some grooming. Warm and a light rain. Doesn't look like the next few days will get any better either.

On a positive note the trails are in good shape and apparently it's just like spring skiing (according to Urs!) So if you don't mind the drizzle it's a good time up there!!

Snow doesn't start till well above lot B...the hill at lot a is nice and grassy. Up on the trails snow depths vary from up to 3 feet to dirt. The groomers have done an excellent job keeping the trails in awesome shape...if I do say so myself!! There will be a snowfest this winter i'm just not sure when. check out the scrd page for more info on that. Every weeeknd I've been up there the parking lot is packed! The road is in sweeeeet shape all the way to the top...so there's no excuse for not getting up there!

Rainy river RD and Tet PeakRainy river RD and Tet Peak
Alert / Warning Saturday, January 16, 2010

I agree with Al, very dangerous right now, we only go up Tet via Rainy river in the spring and summer, aprx 7 k up Rainy there is a road down to River and then a cable bridge that crosses the river, follow the old logging rd 2 km south then right turn NW up, it has taken us 6 hours each time we have gone to summit Tet peak, well worth it but you need an experienced person that knows the trail. You can also access Rainy Mtn the same way. Rainy Mtn trail is aprx 1 km past cable bridge going south.

Trail to the Tet: bring your cramponsTrail to the Tet: bring your crampons
Current Conditions Saturday, January 16, 2010

Drove up to the parking lot this PM. Road hard and clear to the lot. Trail above the barrier sheer ice, but we had a nice walk up the logging road on the west side of the valley. After gaining about 100 metres of elevation, the ice gives way to hardpack, but walking much better than snowshoes. Skis would be suicidal.

Anyway, the sun was out...

Province paper article about DakotaProvince paper article about Dakota
Current Conditions Sunday, January 17, 2010

2 page article about Dakota in Sundays paper. What are we going to do if we get heards of people from City coming up. There is only parking for 30 or so cars. Not to mention soft muddy road and little snow. Think RD should take a serious look at what Dakota needs. Better road and larger parking more trails. Maybe the community forrest loggers could help clear some trails and widen road for cheap.
Think we all need to do snow dance above 2000 ft.
Dakota closed till colder temps and lots more snow falls.

As was mentioned in a previous message there was a article in the province. I agree that there is more work needed before it can handle more traffic, it can be crazy as it is.

as this site won't let me post links (this is the internet i find that strange) go to the province website and search for dakota ridge

Jackrabbits on Dakota RidgeJackrabbits on Dakota Ridge
Current Conditions Tuesday, January 19, 2010

The Jackrabbits (children's x-country ski skills development program) will be starting on January 31st, running 8 Sundays at 10 am and 12:30 at Dakota Ridge. There are about 60 kids registered for this program and many parents are carpooling but there will still be lots of traffic associated with them.

There will be a parking monitor (Jackrabbits parents) to help conserve space in the limited parking lot. We will all have to work cooperatively to get parked, and don't forget the overflow parking on the left about 200m before the main lot.

CarpoolCarpool
Current Conditions Tuesday, January 19, 2010

I think the key factor here is to carpool. If you find yourself going up alone post up here...or wait at the bottom for a few minutes and hitch a ride with someone else. Nothing in the way of parking upgrades will be done until the area brings in some more cash...so please pay trail fees even if you aren't skiing. The main expense up there is plowing the road. i'm doing the snow dance!! 6degrees and raining on cypress :(

Current Conditions Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Hi all, The reason I don't allow posting links in order to avoid SpamBots.

No login is required in order to post to this list which means spammers can write little computer programs that automatically post ads to the site all day long. The internet is crawling with those kinds of bots and I spend a lot of time developing strategies to defeat them.

With all that said I will work on a way to allow posting of links. I will make another announcement when its ready.

btw: The Gibsons Cub Scouts are hoping to have a snow day on the ridge on Sun Jan 24th. Do the think the conditions are ok for sledding and snow shoeing?

Tet conditions updateTet conditions update
Current Conditions Monday, January 25, 2010

As of Saturday, the Grey Creek road was clear and in good shape, with no snow or ice at all up to the winter parking lot. Our ski group had to boot pack up to the snowline near the summer lot. The snowpack was hard and icy up to the Steele cabin, where there was a bit of fresh snow. Anyone hiking or snowshoeing should have an ice axe and crampons if they are planning on travelling in steeper terrain. Edwards & Chapman lakes were OK to cross, although be aware that freezing levels are forecast to be above lake elevation so that may change. Cabins are in good shape - Steele, Edwards & McNair were being used on the weekend - not sure about Batchelor. All have firewood but levels are getting low in Batchelor & McNair - please use sparingly as always, and thanks to all users for your donations - they are gratefully received.
