Snow fall warningSnow fall warning
Alert / Warning Sunday, February 01, 2009

Use extra caution going up to Dakota Ridge and Tet. Use Chains and slow down. Roads are Narrow and visabilty may be poor. Use Headlights when driving on back roads people can see you sooner. SLOW DOWN. there will be lots of idiots driving up there with no chains thinking they are super man. If you have chains on you can stop on a hill and get going again. Chain up the front wheels as that is where all your steering and 75% of your braking are. use low range and low gears coming down and stay off the brakes as much as possible.
Have fun as it looks like a winter wonderland again. Even Studded snow tires can not prevent this.

Awsome day on the ridgeAwsome day on the ridge
Alert / Warning Sunday, February 01, 2009

Wow...What an awesome day up on the ridge. It was snowing all day so there's lots of fresh stuff to be had. Road was in great condition with lots of traction. Really wide too. There were over 30 cars up there...probably over 100 people. Thanks Alpha for putting on the demo day... you guys should be up there every weekend!!!Seriously.

Just a note..someone asked me today who had the right of way on the narrow sections of the road...I told him the guy who was going down as it can be tricky to stop going down hill...any opinions on this??

Tet Conditions from FridayTet Conditions from Friday
Alert / Warning Monday, February 02, 2009

This was emailed to me today about conditions on friday

' I went up Friday morning, the road conditions had not changed much other that having a couple centimetres of wet snow on top of the existing ice. It was raining in the winter lot when I started out but once I got beyond the summer lot the rain had turned to snow. The snow was dumping at Victor's landing and it was windy as well. At Victor's there was between 5-10cm of new wet snow on top of the older crust. As I'm sure you noticed I didn't post on the Suncoast website either, I will after I go up next.

Cheers,'

Anyone can post the more info posted the Better. Things do change fast but atleast knowing what things were like 12-24 hours ago helps make better trip planning.
Have a safe Snow Time.

Current Conditions Monday, February 02, 2009

We skied Dakota trails this afternoon and it was very good. The track setting was excellent and the snow was soft but not mushy. Skating was good, not fast but not slow either. A few kilometers were mucked up by snowshoers which was unfortunate. The temp was +1 and there was a slight drizzle but nothing to worry about. The road is good.

Current Conditions Monday, February 02, 2009

The only way solar lights are gonna work is if they are on poles. With light shining down on the trail. Now I don't
know what the plan is for these lights, so I'm not going to yap until I do,but my lord there are some dum comments
come up on this site. Patrick, give me a call, as I'm curi-ous about this.I am at least open to ideas.

Light The LoopLight The Loop
Current Conditions Monday, February 02, 2009

The best part about soalr lighting is that all of the pieces are redily available and fairly inexspespensive. The solar panel is about 12in. by 18in. The lights are one watt led lights and the battery is a 12 volt dry cell. There will be 4 or more lights on each pole depending on the intersection of the trail or mid trail. There will be a mechanical timer that will give about 1 hr. of light. Like the swithch on a bathroom fan! First person past the light will twist the knob and the light is on. The lights should be about 12 ft. off the ground on a permanent steel post. The light assembly will be removed in the off season but the post will remain. The cost will be $200 to $300 per light depending on the location
Lets get together and light the East side trails!
Spread the word.
Light the Loop!!!

Current Conditions Friday, February 06, 2009

I was up there for a 4 hour ski some fresh snow above parking area. When I went up the road was narrow when I came down it was wide. Big snow banks were moved over 15 feet. Then on way down the big hill was graded. How the hell did they do all that work that fast. That is some high speed grader. They moved a huge snow bank 500 feet long 15 feet wide and ploughed it over to widen the road. I thought they must have used a D8 Cat but it was no where to be seen

Was only around 1'c at noon not much melting up there. Lower part of road is soft and muddy.

Yes that is correct overnight we had 3 inches fresh powder and -8'c at top lot. Full moon and clear skies at 6am.

Great day for a ski, no idea if any grooming will happen during week.

Watch for idiots 4x4s and Quads they have driven on trails and 4x4 truck drove right up to Quanset sat night.

Slow down on the road you might have to stop quickly as road is narrow and HAVE TO SLOW DOWN TO PASS.
Many thanks to the idiot in the large 4x4 pick up with Yamaha skidoo in back yesterday. This guy like to drive with heavy foot and throw rocks and gravel as he drives by you.
SLOW DOWN before someone gets Hurt.

Current Conditions Tuesday, February 10, 2009

There is grooming during the week but they groom when they need to. Check RD weebsite. They do not groom every day. Call RD parks dept if you want to know if they are up grooming before you go up.

Again some people on Quads have tried driving onto trails and doing donuts on the road all the way from Pavement up. This kind of person does not represent the large Quading community. Most quaders have respect for others and have better places to Quad then Cross country ski trails.
This damage happened between 3 and 6 pm last night. Just after grooming crew went home.
If you see Quads up in ski area take a picture of them. Do not confront these persons they may be unstable or on drugs.
Take care remember it is our ski area lets take good care of it.

If I do not know the road has snow I can not plow it.

Don't forget to pay cabin fees and you can always kick in some extra for fuel for the Snow Eater. Old Chinese Proverb 'No Fuel no Plowy.'

Toilet paper might be getting low in outhouses. Take some extra with you and leave it for next time.
Use firewood in Cabins carefully as it costs alot to fly in by Helicopter, Make the wood go as long as it can. Please do not waste the wood.

Vandalism at Dakota RidgeVandalism at Dakota Ridge
Alert / Warning Wednesday, February 11, 2009

In reference to the recent jackass activities of certain quad drivers I'm going to repeat part of a message I posted in December about vandalism and the steps you have to take to report it officially if you have any concrete information like license plate numbers, names, vehicle descriptions:

This kind of incident (which apparently doesn't even qualify as 'mischief'), has to be reported through Vancouver main dispatch, and if you call the RCMP in Sechelt on their non-emergency number you will be transfered there eventually. In order to not have to go through a long and difficult process of trying to get the Vancouver dispatch to understand who/what/where you are talking about you can give a case number that they can refer to: SC 08-9174. You can also call Crimestoppers to report anonymously at 1-800-222-8477. And you can email them anonymously through the Crimestoppers page on Suncoastcentral.com.

We must be community watchdogs. We cannot let a few total A-holes ruin everyone else's fun and hard work.

Still best to use chains on front wheels as there is ice under snow. was -4'c and snowing at lot this morning. Please move car back as far as possible when parking. There is a Blue Honda thing parked 15 ft from edge of lot. Has all season tires no chains. I could have driven my snow plow right around him he is parked so far from edge of lot.

Always good idea to park with front of car facing out and slightly down hill if possible. That way when you come back and you are tired you will not get stuck.
There are freeze and Thaw cycles up there so ice gets heavy in Parking lot.
Watch for large snow balls on road think the Saquatch has been bowling again.

Have fun and please post a report here.

Quads and tearing trails upQuads and tearing trails up
Alert / Warning Thursday, February 12, 2009

Best way to deal with them is if you see them and have a camera take there picture. Then post it on here so we all know who to look for. Some people think that maybe they do not know that there are ski trails up there and since the gate disapeared some people think it might be open season,

These Idiots know dam well what they are doing is wrong they drove inches from the sign that says NO Quads or Skidoos on trails. They purposely tear up the trails with no other purpose then to be Brain dead Morons with nothing better to do. Driving in and out of the bush like they do it is just a question of time before they become a hood fixture when they drive into a SUV or Pick up truck.
Maybe we should have people up skiing in afternoons to 9pm or so Maybe the RD should put the gate back in and say it maybe locked after 4 pm everyday if terrorism does not stop.
I have a feeling that it might be kids out of school that live riding distance from Field road. I have seen Quads driving up field road on the Pavement and even 1 trying to drive through Chapman creek beside the bridge at the Hwy at dark. It is time we put a stop to these Holligans wrecking something good. Like there are not enough other places to ride on CNI propoerty etc.

Atleast the Snow mobile club has worked with the RD and layed out a route and proper signs etc. I know I like to ski out back up to the top and skiing in sled tracks is good as long as they do not zig zag everywhere.

It is just a question of time before one of these quaders gets hurt up there doing crazy stuff.

Road to DakotaRoad to Dakota
Alert / Warning Friday, February 13, 2009

Be carefull I got stuck last time they plowed road like that cost me $350 to get towed out. DO NOT pull over to let someone pass back up to pullout. I was up there today and they have plowed snow well over the ditch to the far side of the ditch so any dirt you see is from the dirt bank across the ditch.
I was up the Tet yesterday and that road has been plowed totally different, it is plowed with snow curbs and is plowed wide as possible with out going in the ditch. Why does the SCRD plow 1 road one way and the other so different. 1 road you can trust the pullouts and edge of road and the other you can not.
If you are going to the Dakota area use chains and fight the urge to pull over.

Once you get up there it will be a great time. Great snow and grooming. Take sunscreen and sunglasses. Could get a burn up there. So sunny and bright.

Road is soft use 4 wheel drive from the pavement or you will tear ruts in the road. Use chain above 4km. drive slow and expect some fool with out chains flying around the next corner sideways. Better slow and steady then fast and in ditch. 20-30 kmph is plenty fast enough.
Have fun in the sun.

The conditions in Tetrahedron Park are beautiful at the moment, and the road is in great shape thanks to the Snowman. Remember to use snow chains on the drive up anyhow. Clear and sunny during the day, clear and starry at night last night. The trails have been broken but there is still plenty of powder around. The temperature at the winter lot was about -3 degrees C when I checked. Also don't forget to have self-rescue equipment for everyone in your party. Have fun!

Once we got up there it was great. On way down we saw a guy running a skidoo up and down the hill on gasline Guess it is the guy who packed and groomed it last time too. Looks like a great tobogan run.

We skied out west from the road just above lot B to the Big clear cut no one had been out there for some time it was breath taking the view from southern gulf islands all the way up to Comox. Great level ground foe us older types to ski with out up and down hills.

Current Conditions Saturday, February 14, 2009

The title pretty much says it all.
For the last month I have been going up to skate ski both Sat. and Sunday. It seem like each weekend the trail conditions improve but after today it was heaven or as close as I'm likely to get. The road has been in the best condition I could imagine and has now been widened in preparation for any future snow fall and to allow the melt water access to the ditches so that the road won't become a creek bed. I used chains today from parking lot B up but have only used them one other time in the last three weeks. I would personally like to thank and congratulate all the people involved with making Dakota ridge a success.

TeT Road plowingTeT Road plowing
Current Conditions Monday, February 16, 2009

Everyone can show there appreciation by donating money for fuel to the Tet Outdoor club. They are paying for the fuel. When you pay cabin fees add some extra and tag it for fuel for snow plow. Even with out fresh snow we need to plow sometimes to improve the road or prevent water damage from melting snow and ice. All the truck time is donated by me. If anyone wants to donate welding or repairs to truck it will help. Also need people to help brush road out as needed.
Biggest help of all is to keep posting road and trail conditions.
Chaining up and spreading your tracks cuts down on plowing costs and keeps the road in better shape. With 11 vehicles up there on the weekend there could be atleast $250 contributions to fuel. $20 a car for fuel to plow. Make sure to pay cabin fees and memberships for club.
Don't forget it cost $8,000 to fly the firewood into cabins this year.
BC Parks has helped out alot but has been cut back due to Budget restraits.

Think of what it would take to walk from the bridge to parking lot like part of last year.
Mark donations for fuel separate from Cabin fees.
Post some pics of your trip here.

Current Conditions Wednesday, February 18, 2009

Great day to take the kids up to have a snow Day.
There is a great tobogan run at Lot a just at 8km mark, it is around 500 long and you can drive to top let kids out and drive to bottom and get them. Or you can say you need the exercise walk up. Thanks to Terasen gas for Brushing it out and Members of snow mobile club for packing and grooming it.

Don't forget sunglasses and sunscreen could be warm and sun is applified by the white snow. Easy to get sunburn or dehydrated.
Let us know how your day is up there.
Lots of groomed trails to ski on or snow shoe. Use caution around any low spots as water maybe melting snow from underneath. Ditches may not be safe to cross and any spot that looks to level could be a pond that may or may not be frozen enough. Use your common sense as day time temps are very high and could melt ponds.

Here is a pic of a 2 wheel drive car that drove almost all way to Tet. They got stuck on hill about 1 km from parking lot. Tet road is to Dangerous to be driven with 2 wheel drives even with chains. This car chewed big ruts in hill making it more difficult for others to drive in 4x4s.
STRONGLY RECOMEND 4X4 WITH CHAINS ON. Tet road is very difficult driving, has slush that plugs tires and ice underneath the slush. Very close to needing 2 sets of chains.

Current Conditions Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Snowing 3 inches at top overnight snowing still. Temp just around -1'c. Snow starts just above lot B. Spread your tracks out and they won't need to plow. Save the money for grooming later in week.

wet gloppy snowwet gloppy snow
Current Conditions Tuesday, February 24, 2009

there are 3 inches of wet gloppy snow on the ridge today and it is not a grooming day - it is like trying to ski in wet concrete - a great workout, but not much fun. oh - and it's foggy too. the road has fresh snow from B lot up which has not been ploughed yet which makes for difficult traction in places. the parking lot is especially gucky.
let's hope the forecast for new fluffy stuff is correct tomorrow.

10 inches of fresh stuff at the top by 10am today and a lot more coming down. groomers working hard to keep up. road ploughing underway. snowshoe trails actually need snowshoes!
Wed night ski tonight. need goggles.

Tet need chainsTet need chains
Current Conditions Wednesday, February 25, 2009

Please use chains on Tet road. Wet snow turning to ice when driven on. Suicide hill would live upto its name if you do not chain up. Engage 4 wheel drive as soon as off pavement chain up when you see snow. No 2 wheel drives should drive this road winter or summer.

Tet Road plowed last night and again this morningTet Road plowed last night and again this morning
Current Conditions Thursday, February 26, 2009

Only plowed from top of Suicide hill. Chains needed -4'c at Parking lot heavy ice under snow.

Take shovels both snow and dirt so you can dig your self out of trouble or a good parking spot.
Don't forget the road may be good when you go up but after a few hours or a couple of days the road may be far worse. USE CHAINS do not go up in 2 wheel drives with chains. This is a 4x4 road with chains. Yes you might be able to drive up and down with out chains. But if you have top stop because another SUV is coming you won't get going again if you can stop. PLEASE CHAIN UP only takes a few minutes and far safer. If plow did not chain up the road would never get plowed.
5 mins to chain up could save 8 hours of getting out of ditch or worse.

Snowfest 2009Snowfest 2009
Current Conditions Thursday, February 26, 2009

Snowfest 2009

Dakota Ridge is a winter recreation area managed by the Sunshine Coast Regional District. Many local residents have enjoyed the new road access to the upper parking lot and the network of groomed cross- country ski trails and snowshoe routes available this year. If you have been curious about Dakota Ridge, and would like to experience the area, plan on attending Snowfest 2009.

Snowfest 2009 will be held at Dakota Ridge on Sunday March 15 from 10 am – 2:30 pm. A jointly sponsored event by the SCRD and the Tetrahedron Outdoor Club, Snowfest is fantastic celebration of winter activity here on the Sunshine Coast. Demonstrations and events will be held throughout the day, including- a cross-country ski loppet (fun ski race), demonstrations from the new Jackrabbit youth ski program, equipment demonstrations from local companies, and fun family events.

The Sechelt Rotary Club will again supply food services for Snowfest.
Hot food and an array of cold and hot beverages will be available for purchase.
If you need to rent cross-country skis for the day, please do so off-site prior to snowfest.

Last year’s snowfest was incredibly successful, with hundreds of people attending. One major challenge for this year will be access to Dakota Ridge and parking. In order to minimize traffic congestion on the mountain roads please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Carpool wherever possible. The mountain roads leading up to Dakota Ridge will be controlled on March 15 for snowfest. A very limited number of vehicles will be allowed up to the top parking lot early in the day with full occupancy only. All other vehicles will be parked at a lower parking lot and visitors will be shuttled to the top parking lot using a network of shuttle vehicles. There will be an access fee of $2 per person.
- Maximum capacity for this event will be less than 500 people. Come early to ensure that you will have access.
- Be prepared for the weather. The snow is still falling in our mountains- please bring appropriate clothing for a day of fun on snow. If you are driving up to take the shuttle- ensure that your vehicle is prepared. Snow and ice can make for difficult driving conditions. Chains and / or four-wheel drive may be needed.
- Please be patient with the staff at Snowfest. The volunteers will be doing their very best to bring you an excellent experience.
- Please leave your dog at home for snowfest.

All events and activities for snowfest are free of charge. For more information- please check the Dakota Ridge page on the SCRD website.

I know the road was plowed on wed and trail groomed but no info on the officail website since tuesday morning.
Guess it is a secret and they do not want us to know there is snow up there.

Hope someone can update us all.

SCRD website was updated later todaySCRD website was updated later today
Current Conditions Friday, February 27, 2009

It says trails groomed no mention of new snow or temps etc.
Suggest you check it out.

Snow shoe race on sat at noon maybe be alot of extra traffic up there. Use caution and be ready to put chains on use headlights to be seen farther away. Be very carefull if you pull over to allow others to pass. Road is narrow and some places are plowed farther then the road is wide.
This is why nest to use chains above lot B for sure. Slow down as Radar has been up there clocking speeds in the past.

30 kmph speed limit is in place because of narrow road and may have to stop to pass etc. Be prepared for anything,
Have a safe snow day.
