Thanks to ruts left by 4x4s. RD crew was up today deliver more wood for the woodstove. Hope they checked the toilet paper supply. Road in not bad shape been alot of traffic up to lot C Quanset area.
Logging trucks still hauling and will be all weekend most likely. They are trying to beat the snows. Take care

If you have been up the Tet please let us know how things are. ANY one can post a message.

Drove all the way to the quanset hut again but new snow a challenge. Skied with Jim Janke out around Westerly trails to keep out of the Easterly wind. Nice new snow 5-10cms - cross ditches still wet though. Headed down about 2pm: the road below Western Forest Products turnoff now made slippery and dangerous by numerous vehicles coming up and spinning out. Only saw one other vehicle at the top - maybe 6 or 7 at the B lot. ATVers made a big fire in front of the RD's storage container. Kudos to ex-plowman for keeping the road open for us.

From a 9 am start, first up to the trailhead save for Cavin's Mog...18' of fresh on a 6 ' base with some evidence of rock damage on my ski bases. Took the hits crossing trail low points, still running water. Need a few pallets to bridge the gaps. Took a 7 Km tour through the west side staying mostly out of the wind. Someone had a fire going in the warming hut on the return. A bit of chaos on the descent just after noon, several stuck 4X4s at the steep hill/curve at about km 7...came down to giant snow flake flurry in Wilson Creek.

Oh My god where is the plow for road to ski hillOh My god where is the plow for road to ski hill
Alert / Warning Sunday, December 02, 2007

The road was so slippery and kids were going down the hill on crazy carpets. We just about ran over a young 12 year old. The road is so iced up from people letting there kids slide down the big hill by the gas line on the Road. We had to tell out kids not to ever do something so stupid. The kids Parents were there watching kids slide down the hill with us driving up. Someones kid is going to get hurt or worse.
We will not go up there any more, last year it was plowed so kids could not slide down the hill. What has happend why are hwys not plowing it now they did a great job last year.
I think I will have nightmares of that poor child sliding by our wheels. There were people up there in 2 wheel drive pick up trucks spinning all the way up. It was a gong show. We put cable chains on and had no problem but hate to think what would happen if we did not.
It must have snowed a foot up there and was snowing heavy when we chickened out.
Why are they not plowing it like last year. We had no problem last year and this is just the start.

Current Conditions Monday, December 03, 2007

Guess the pineapples are flying with the wind. Hope freezing level comes down a bit. We may loose alot of snow before we get to play in it.
Gee sounds like we are in for a bad year with that road. To bad, nice up there at Dakota Ridge but if it is to hard to get to not much use to us.
Do they actually have a big groomer up there. Who can get up there to ski behind it superman.
Is that snow cat thing going to transport us up hill from down below at Lot A if we can not drive to Lot B. Or down at 6km when no one can make it up the hill.
I turned around on sunday to many vehicles stuck on hill blocking it.

Is the SCRD running ski area or notIs the SCRD running ski area or not
Current Conditions Monday, December 03, 2007

No info on website since sept. Where is the update in late Oct. No plowing and No grooming so far and only promises that next year we might be able to drive to top. The only thing for sure is that it snows up there, and someone is pulling the wool over our eyes.
What happened to all the talk about Olympic teams being able to train up there. What a crock, does anyone even know what is going on. The only thing we do know is the money has been spent and RD is going to charge for rides up a hill we should be able to drive up.
If RD takes care of Dakota road like they did the Tet road we are in for a rough or no road to ski area. RD has had charge of Tet road for 3 years and yet to spend a penny to try to fix it. I do not think MOF will trust RD to take care of two roads.
Good Luck trying to get up to see your new ski area/ ghost town.

Current Conditions Tuesday, December 04, 2007

Snow all gone up to lot B. Tough ski up that dam hill. skied out west some trails under water. Had to go through the bush. 1 spot had 2 feet of water on it for 50 feet of the trail. Other trails have streams of water pouring down them. Many ditches across the trails are running with large amounts of water. Do you think maybe they should have put some culverts in. Pretty poor trail building. pools of water being trapped by logs and stumps where water wants to go. Tried digging under it but was futal. Water is running down the ruts from stupid 4x4s and quads that like to make mud. Atleast the snow mobiles packed some trails down for me.

Does any one go and check the trails.

Dakota IssuesDakota Issues
Alert / Warning Thursday, December 06, 2007

The recent comments in this blog about the Dakota road and trail deficiencies underline that the SCRD is still failing to even come close to even modest expectations.
Unfortunately, right from the start of the RD's involvement in the Dakota project, the cart was put before the horse. Instead of a logical and timely development of the requisite infrastructure, ie. road access, the RD started spending like drunken sailors on window dressing. I refer to the near $200K of the $350K raised, spent on the Piston Bully, a 'Mercedes' level alpine groomer that has sat idle for two years while users still continue to struggle to get to the trail head.
Instead of benefiting from the valuable (and free) depth of experience of the many people who conceived the dream and organised the grants to get the project going, the staff at the RD in their infinite wisdom (or is it ego?) have spurned the expertise and plowed ahead blindly making colossal blunders. Consider the trailwork as done: the ski trails have been built as roads - a completely unnecessary and costly effort in both the short and long term that now attracts recreational machinery which furthur contributes to the disruption of the sensitive ground and resultant siltation problems.
Next, consider the recently installed machine shed (to house the Piston Bully) which has been built in pretty much an excavated hole. Seemingly forgotten is that there'll soon be 3 meters of snow and getting that machine in and out of it may not quite work out as planned. Almost anyone with a drop of common sense can easily also imagine the floods that the spring will bring...
Finally, consider the steel warming hut which is to feature of all things, a flush toilet! In order to keep that facility from freezing up in the alpine environment, the plan seems to be to keep a fuel burning generator running during winter months! Kind of flies against the whole clean air and quiet ideal of the pristine environment, does it not? The RD's staff are blithely applying sea level based building principles in a much harsher alpine environment.

The Dakota Ridge Winter Rec Society has now pretty well collapsed from the constant frustration of dealing with such a careless beaurocracy and watching as their hard work and funds raised get casually squandered. The remains of the DRWRS have asked the Tetrahedron Outdoor Club to consider getting involved in helping to manage this project, however, the Outdoor Club is somewhat gun shy about furthur dealings with the RD considering the track record over the Grey Creek/Tetrahedron road maintenance issue which, after three and a half years, still not a shovel has turned!

In the interim, a small band of volunteers are still trying, in an ad hoc fashion, to keep trail low points draining. More wooden pallets will have to be brought up to bridge the flows on the trails that wash away precious snow. Unfortunately, unwelcome recreational machine traffic often crush the pallets, negating the effort...and, of course, no signage has been erected to inform mechanised users to respect the ski trails.

I would ask everyone concerned to please get involved, make your area SCRD director aware of your concerns and please join the Tet Outdoor Club to help make this dream a reality. We really need some fresh horses to help carry this project through sensibly and expediently!

B&K RoadB&K Road
Current Conditions Friday, December 07, 2007

Not much snow or ice on B&K to about 6.5kms. We chained up around there and came across patches of bare road alternating with ice/rough snow to 8kms. Old road up to Elphie from there pretty bare to quarry, but with some icy sections. Most drainages running and no bridges across. Skiable about 5mins past major left turn after first lookout, with half the ditches bridged and half with running water. About 1inch dry powder on top of 12-16inch hard base above that major left turn. Route mostly nice and wide, though alders will lean into upper sections fairly soon. Awesome views into Howe Sound!

Dakota ConditionsDakota Conditions
Current Conditions Saturday, December 08, 2007

Conditons for Dakota are marginal, lots of bare spots in the trees and no new snow. We ran all the trails, cleared some fallen trees and tried to bridge some low spots with branches and debris. We also tried packing and grooming with the snowmobile. It was a rough ride.
On another note, so many negative comments makes me concerned as I have spent alot of my time working on this project.(don't eat me alive! I'm just the labour)
I thought I would try to shed just a little light on some of the unanswered questions; The Groomer is arriving early next week. An RD employee will be grooming as neeeded based on weather as well as volunteers on weekends. The plan is the machine will plow around the buildings every time it comes out. Also signage will be arriving late next week hopefully. Also there is a contract for the road to be plowed at least twice a week also based on weather.

Dakota Ridge may have close to 1 foot new snowDakota Ridge may have close to 1 foot new snow
Alert / Warning Thursday, December 13, 2007

In last 24 hours most local mountains are saying 30 cms new snow in last 2 days. That is 12 inches. I have not been up but can only guess there will be atleast 1 foot new snow at Lot B and Lot C. Lot A might have a bit less but still expect snow on road. Have 4x4 with winter tires and carry chains. Get out and see if you can stand up. sometimes ice is hidden by snow. My advise is Use chains, cheaper then a tow truck or damage to your vehicle. Might want to make sure you have snow shovel and some bags of sand in back for weight. Take care slow down and use your headlights, watch for cars coming from other direction and slow down when passing. Road is Narrow and we do not want any body hurt.

DO NOT TOBOGAN OR SLIDE DOWN HILLS ON TUBES SNOW BOARDS ON THE ROAD!!!!!!! They are many vehicles that use the roads.
Please do not let your friends or kids slide on roads. Vehicles may come up the hill fast and sliding makes road very slippery. Pick a old logging road with no tracks on it or the Gas line.
Road is not plowed yet as far as I know.

Compact snow on the road down to km 3. About 5' of new snow at PL B.
The west flank trails are almost completely 'palletized' only need a couple more dozen to finish that side. East of the old mine road is untouched. We have made a sleigh to tow 5-6 pallets at the time with a snowmobile. It is park on the back side of the equipment shed. Go ahead and use it!

Alert / Warning Friday, December 14, 2007

The alpine forecast is calling for between 30 inches and 45 inches of fresh snow by Monday night. That is like 8-12 inches every night. There may be a chance of Rain showers on Dakota Sunday as temps are going to rise but this will be a short period of time.
The Road might not be plowed yet so expect alot of fresh snow on the road. Use extreme caution as this is a winter road. No Tow trucks are going to come pull you out. Good winter tires,4x4, and carry and use chains when needed.
Watch for silly people sliding down the road on crazy carpets,Tobogons,Snow Boards and inner tubes. Brains did not come in there cereal Box!!!!

Current Conditions Saturday, December 15, 2007

Yep, lots of new snow. Tracks have not been set yet but the shuttle is up and running - 3 of us went up on the 11:00 and were the only takers today. If you want a fire in the hut bring your own dry newspaper and matches (hut supply is too damp to burn). Last year plowguy plowed very early in the a.m. and vehicles following had a fairly easy time of it. The road was plowed yesterday and lots of new snow has fallen since then, making the road a little hairy to drive this morning. I wouldn't have made it without chains. I recommend chaining up by km6, even though you'll encounter a few bare patches after that.

The season has begun!

Kudos to the plowing effort to lot B! Definetly most 2WDs with real snow tires could've made it up today.
Recent rains have helped consolidate the recent accumulation on trails, however, there are still creeks running through in many palces. Stalwert types were seen brining up a big load of pallets for bridging the flows - Thanks to Snowman(and his Mog) and to Custom Carpets in Wilson Creek for donating the pallets!!
The ski back down the road back to lot B was fairly fast, uneven and crusty.

The best is yet to come!

Tire chainsTire chains
Current Conditions Monday, December 17, 2007

I figured this would be the place to pose the question: Where is the best place to buy tire chains on the Coast. Never using them before I would not even know where to look, and would like to be suited up for the season.
Thanks for any advice you may be able to have.

Chains continued...Chains continued...
Current Conditions Monday, December 17, 2007

The best source for chains would be Coastal Tires (Gibsons) or Ok Tire and Cal Tire (Sechelt). These guys are pros able to get you fixed up with the chains best suited for you and your vehicle.
The latest developments of cable chains seem to be the best deal these days. They're less expensive and easier to apply than the heavy duty 'real' chains as they tend to lie flat for application and have cam/lever tensioning which makes them self centering, eliminating the need for extra bungee cords to tighten them.
The heavy duty V bar style are best if you're going into serious mud and snow terrain but they require sufficient wheel well clearance. If the application is a front wheel drive car or even the front wheels of many SUVs then they may not clear properly and can do serious damage to the wheel wells...
Now, even if you now have good traction with your new chains, you can still get stuck if the vehicle has insufficient road clearance as the undercarriage starts to drag in deep snow. You'll eventually get high centered and have to dig out the snow from under the chassis to get the wheels back down enough to contact the road...ALWAYS carry a shovel!

Also bear in mind that chains are sized to fit certain wheel/tires and may no longer fit if you upgrade to a different size or change vehicle.

Tire ChainsTire Chains
Current Conditions Monday, December 17, 2007

Best Chains for traction and ease of putting them on is Alpine chains. They are a cross between Cable chains and reg chains. But much better traction. Easy to put on with out moving the vehicle. Can put chains on all 4 wheels in less then 5 minutes. They use square sided chain in a diamond pattern for traction and a heavy cable on inside of tire for ease of putting on. Best traction chains I have ever used.

I plowed with them for years.

Dakota RidgeDakota Ridge
Alert / Warning Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Looks like another foot of snow to come by Friday. Most of it will come on Wed. Expect between 30-45 cms more this week.
Temp are dropping can start to expect -12'c at night and -4 during day. Good idea to take extra pair dry socks etc. Long hike down in wet clothes.
Other back country roads maybe very icey, heard reports of 4x4s shredding chains on heavy ice on back roads. We are lucky Dakota was plowed before it froze up.
Remember the road is not sanded and it is narrow, Please use your headlights and slow down when other vehicles coming from other direction. SLOW DOWN.

Road was graded up to 6km today thanks to WFP and Sechelt Creek Contracting. The snow plow was working at 8pm and it was snowing lightly. Some 2 wheel drive cars have been going up and spinning out on the big hill. Very icey, 4x4 and winter tires needed carry chains and use them before you get stuck. No tow trucks will go up there to help you.
Have a safe snow day.

Current Conditions Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Dakota ridge has received over 3 feet of fresh since last week with more coming tomorrow. RD staff and volunteers have been busy this week as about 50% of the ski trails have been groomed. The road from PL B to the ski trails is in great shape. The cross ditches have been filled and the road is groomed. It is a sweet ski up and down. Access to PL B is fairly good as the road was plowed. Ice and snow start around Km 3. This is a tough winter mountain road. Drive with care.

To get daily update on road and snow condition, phone SCRD Parks at 885-6800 and follow the telephone maze...

Just got back from plowing Tet road snowing heavy up top at lot. almost 2 feet there. I almost could not get up because of a MPV Van parked just on edge of road 200 feet above gravel pit. Please park well of the road DO NOT just park on road. Was very icey and I almost slid into the Van. Take a shovel and dig your self a parking spot.
Road is plowed some but very icey and hard to move even with chains on. Snow starts heavy just around bridge. Use chains and spread your tracks pack the road down and won't need to plow.

Snow is upto gate maybe someone should open it before it gets buried.

Jim Janke, volunteer extraordinaire, has done a wonderful job grooming and tracksetting. All trails are in excellent shape. The sun is shining and there's a big moon tonight.
The snow is cool and crisp and there's a ton of it. When you step off your skis in powder you are down to your crotch so try and take off your skins with your skis on. Easier said than done. Easy drive to Lot B. in 2 whl drive. Decided not to chew up the hill driving any further - better to leave it groomed for skiing down.
Please don't park in the turnaround by the containers -

Elphinstone and B&KElphinstone and B&K
Current Conditions Friday, December 21, 2007

Yesterday B&K was drivable to 6.5kms, and probably beyond for vehicles with really good clearance. Skied up to 1st lookout on road at 8kms. All ditches to 1st lookout, except the first few small ones, have been successfully bridged for skiing! A big thank you to the party who did all the work on those ditches (Lawrence, I think?) - it was a real pleasure to travel that trail. Didn't get beyond 1st lookout but peeked at the next ditch beyond - bridged! Snow is beautiful dry powder by about 800m. Alders are encroaching near 1st lookout - think about bringing a small saw, clippers to clear trail for descent.

Though bridges are ditched for skiing there is no way they can be used by snowmobiles - they're only made of alder branches.

Dakota Dakota 's so fine !
Current Conditions Friday, December 21, 2007

Early morning ascent along with RD crew. As we geared up at lot B, several carloads of expectant people arrived hoping for a shuttle ride up at lot B.
A very smooth climb up the groomed 2.5 km to the trailhead where the RD crew were erecting new signage. Markers now in place at most trail intersections.
Trails have now been compacted and groomed several times over the last week and track is set on some, more to come this weekend. No fresh snow from overnight, however, the groomed was still like velvet. Silken tele turns in available powder off trail - Yeowzah!
Perhaps my finest ski out ever down from Dakota on this corduroy road and back to lot B. Brilliant!
Met some folks chaining up around the 7km hill which apparently had gotten slippery. It'd be prudent for the RD to arrange for some sanding of that particular troublesome stretch as there's bound to be plenty of use over the holidays.
Enjoy!!

Sanding will not work on that roadSanding will not work on that road
Current Conditions Friday, December 21, 2007

It would take alot of sand and would have to be done every few hours. People need to chain up when slippery. I sanded that road 2 years ago and results were poor as sand disapears quickly and gives a false sense of security.
If the road was pavement and plowed down to pavement Sand would help for traction. Sand does not work well when conditions change so quikly. Please Chain up, Please do not stop in middle of road to chain up or halfway up the hill. It is much easier to chain up before you need it.

Chaining up will give you some control but please slow down and expect other vehicles coming around the corner or down the hill. Respect the road. Please do not tow kids on tubes on road or slide down hills on main road.

Drive safe and have a good snow day.

Christmas on Dakota RidgeChristmas on Dakota Ridge
Current Conditions Wednesday, December 26, 2007

It was clear and sunny and there were 27 vehicles up on Christmas eve but Christmas Day was a different story. We were the only tracks as we headed up from IGA at 11am. The wind was blowing from the East so rather than seek the sheltered westerly trails we headed into the wind to seek drifts and deep powder with our tele gear. We were fine until we fell over in the new deep stuff trying to take our skins off - then we got chilly. The wind picked up. We couldn't see our tracks from 1/2 hour ago. Heading down at 3pm we saw a couple of snowshoers heading up and gave them a wind warning - other than that just the usual crazy Christmas yahoos in the ditch on the way up.
Snow conditions are awesome.
PLEASE - don't park in front of the containers - they have rescue gear inside.

That Dakota roadThat Dakota road
Current Conditions Wednesday, December 26, 2007

Thanks for the regular updates on the road Mr. Snowman. I have been using Dakota for the last 5 years, lets say 5 times per year. Have always used the same vehicle and have never had an issue going up or down. Headed up there on Dec 24 with the family. On our way down I nearly, nearly lost it on corner heading down near 6.5KM mark. Now I have two young kids in the vehicle and am a conservative driver to boot but before I knew what was up the brakes were locked and we where headed for the west side ditch. Thanks to the red truck coming from up-mountain who gave me a minute to unload the kids from the vehicle, catch my breath and steer away and out of harms way.
Point is I guess is that I have never experienced the Dakota road that iced up and treacherous. At top of previous hill I lost one of my rear wheel chains, so this may have had something to do with sliding, but I've never used chains up there before and have always navigated that corner without incident. Anways, it would be great to see a road that all S.C. residents could access in the winter months. In the mean time I'll head back up there again and pay even more attention to the that nasty corner at KM 6.5

Even with a 4x4 pick up truck with Studded Winter tires and lots of weight in the back I still went in the ditch last season. You can go up and down most times with out chains b But when you have to hit the brakes because somebody is stopped on the hill or someone comes up real fast and there is no room and you just touch the brakes you will be sorry. If you have chains on and slow down and expect somebody to be stopped on the hill and drive accordingly. (Slow) Not much fun having another vehicle come around the corner fast and hit the brakes only to slide towards you. That is bad enough but when they Laugh about it as they slide towards you when you have 2 kids in the truck and you have chains on.
Please slow down and stop and check the road, if it feels to easy to steer you are probally on ice.
It can cost $350 or more if a tow truck will even come and tow you out.
Chains are cheeper. 4x4s still only have 4 brakes just like a car.

Great snow but no trails groomed and high winds are blowing snow off the trails. Some places hard to tell if there is a trail.

watch for people who haven't done this wedged sideways across the road on blind corners, and mabey pull over to chain up around 4-5k mark.
Snow was great, nice and dry, looking foreward to tomorrow.

Plow operator is doing the best he canPlow operator is doing the best he can
Alert / Warning Thursday, December 27, 2007

People need to use real chains, Cable chains do not work very good on snow conditions we have. Also people snow boarding done the hills and people with no chains spining going up makes it very icey. Even a grader can not break through the ice. If everyone used real chains it would help break the ice up and plow could plow better. There have been lots of people using the road to tobogan on and snow board.
Snow conditions and temps have made it ideal for ice. This has been a heavy season for snow.
Get alpine chains they are far better then Cable chains. Maybe suggest the RD dump some sand at various points on the hill at 6-7km for people to use when it is bad, But chains on all 4 wheels are still the best.
The B&K is barely passable to high 4 wheel drives with chains. I tried plowing it but it is down to ice with compact snow on it.
I have suggested to MOF that the trees along the hill should be taken down for safety. But have had little responce. Maybe more people should contact MOF and ask for trees to be removed to make road safer.
The 6-7km section is by far the most dangerous part of the entire road. Yet it is not planned to fix it.

Alert / Warning Friday, December 28, 2007

Not sure how the road is but it will be a challenge to plow. If there were no cross ditches I could take the Big Snow Blower. Hrad to get down to gravel when snow has been compacted and freezing rain under it.
Please use chains and spread your tracks out. Makes it alot easier to plow when everyone uses chains to help break up snow and ice.
Cable chains may not help on heavy ice. People are finding out the hard way on Dakota road that Cable chains are not the best and give a false sense of security.

Buy Alpine Chains, they are designed for ice and snow and are easy to put on. They use a heavy cable on inside tire then square linked chain in a diamond patern. Then they have rubber snubber system to keep tight.
Cable chains or the heavy V bar chains can damage break lines or body panels. When they come loose.

Take care and you might want a steel shovel. Make sure you have a trip plan left with a friend or family to check in with when you come back.
Cell phones will not work up there.

Though our 4Runner with cable chains could have made it to km8, we parked at km6.5 for an overnight on the 26th because it's very hard to turn around at km8 if there are other vehicles parked (or just stopped in the middle of the road). The km6.5 pullout has fairly deep snow on it but it is large and you can dig yourself a parking spot without too much trouble. Cavin's plowing the other day reduced the high centre hump - thanks again!! Elphie Trail is an awesome ski both up and down and the untracked powder up at the saddle and on the old logging roads is fantastic. Alert / Warning Friday, December 28, 2007

Two days ago I drove to the Dakota road without any problems with 4X4 and good all season tires. Today was a different story. Thanks to some snowboarders on the road, the conditions were like an ice rink. I ended up in the ditch twice and was hit by another out of control vehicle from behind. There were numerous other vehicles in trouble all along the road. Cavin, James and other helpful souls came to our rescue, pulled us out from the ditch and loaned us Alpine chains so we could drive down safely. These volunteers worked tirelessly all afternoon helping stranded vehicles. HEED THE WARNINGS AND DO NOT BE LULLED INTO A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY -- THE CONDITIONS ARE TREACHEROUS AND REQUIRE EXPERIENCE AND ALPINE CHAINS.
Thanks to everyone who helped my boys and I out today. Richard.

Dakota Ridge and Road inDakota Ridge and Road in
Current Conditions Saturday, December 29, 2007

I spent the better part of the day today in beautiful snow bound Dakota Ridge. The drive in was easy. The road has been beautifully plowed up to the parking lot. No one was sledding or boarding on the road itself so there were no sudden stops required. If you have good snow tires, a vehicle with sufficient weight and a good understanding of how to drive in snow and ice conditions it can be fine. If you have all season radials, bald tires, a light weight vehicle and no common sense it will be very difficult and dangerous to drive this road.

Skiing was fabulous. There is so much snow and it was continuing to come down all day long. Jim Janke and another fellow, whose name I did not catch, were out in the Piston Bully grooming away at the trails. With great pleasure we skied a few that they had completed prior to our arrival. As we continued skiing on the west side they were actively grooming. The sheer mass of snow must make this somewhat difficult at times. I thank these two men (volunteers) for their many hours spent driving the big machine to make a good ski area for myself and many others that were there today. There were assorted skiers, snowshoers, boarders and sledders out enjoying the best of winter.

NOTE The drive out was very long due to a number of vehicles getting stuck and dug out while the rest of us waited in a small convoy behind. DO NOT drive this road if you do not have an appropriate vehicle with appropriate tires/chains and good snow/ice driving skills. The SCRD's plowing contractor is doing a great job producing a wide well plowed road. Neither the SCRD or the contractor can prevent ice and snow buildup on the road. You must take personal responsibility and drive for the conditions.

PARENTS: DO NOT let your children sled or ski or do anything else ON the road. Vehicles are unable to stop quickly and may hit one of them. These activities also polish the ice on the road to perfection making sure that cars and trucks will slide off the sparkling surface.

there' lots of fresh snow at dakota ridge, making for fine skiing. the road, however is extremely treacherous!!! chains or cables are mandatory, especially on the way down! you need to have a set on your front wheels so you can steer. I have pulled many trucks out of the ditch just below the first parking lot, mainly because most people do not realize how slippery the road is. good tires slide as well as summer tires under these conditions. and quit blaming snowboarders and sledders! the vehicles are responsible along with the temperature hovering around 0 degrees.

Alpine Chains Are the best and easiest to put onAlpine Chains Are the best and easiest to put on
Alert / Warning Saturday, December 29, 2007

Cable chains are better then nothing but for best Traction and ease of use Alpine Chains are the Best. They have 1 heavy cable on the inside of tire then square egded chain in a diamond pattern for traction. They have ether a spider rubber snubber system to keep tight or a chain and cam system with a small rubber snubber. Napa or Canadian tire carry them they are around $100 a set get 2. If I have to come pull you out I would charge $350. Chains $200. Time saved sitting in ditch trying to get cell phone to get Help. ALL Day.
Snow Boarders and kids slidding On tubes and crazy carpets do Make the road worse.
People doing donuts in middle of road or spinning wheels all way up hill DO ice it up.
Using chains will help break up the ice so Snow Plow can gets road down to gravel.

Parents letting there kids slide down hills on the road are risking loosing there children. PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS SLIDE DOWN MAIN ROAD. There are some nice side roads with no traffic on. The Gas line just across from Lot A is a good place to slide.

B&K road is not passable over to Dakota Ridge. Road is heavily snowed in from Bridge around Hairpin. Several 4x4s were stuck last night.
Good chance Tow Trucks will not come and pull you out up there.
If you drive up to Dakota with out chains the chance is better that you go in ditch then win the Lottery. So do you want to buy lottery tickets Or Chains.
SLOW down even with Chains on because the other guy might not have them. Do not stand around on the hills chatting. ( Being a bowling Pin for the Next car out of Control)
Things go bad real fast up there.
Carry shovels and sand bags along with chains etc, Flashlights, Food, Water, Heavy tow rope.
CHECK YOUR GAS BEFORE YOU GO UP. If you have less then Half a tank stay home. What is the point of pulling you out of the ditch if you are out of Gas.
SNOW PLOW Chains up. he does not want to go in ditch. Be smart not risk taker.
Have fun and play Safe. Even 4x4 with Studded winter tires and lots of weight in back gets stuck.

Next time Fools just park on road I will turnaround and not plow to dangerous to try to get 10 ft wide plow around Stupid Cars parked on Road. In Winnipeg they would just push you in the Ditch for Spring Thaw.

There is a warning SignThere is a warning Sign
Alert / Warning Saturday, December 29, 2007

Dakota road has a warning sign it is at the Junction just at the Power line. It says 4x4 and carry Chains.
Suggest you contact the SCRD for better signage. The SCRD website. It says
'Access
Access to Dakota Ridge is limited to 4X4 vehicles with chains. The road will be plowed periodically, however you can expect icy winter conditions and must be prepared to use chains at all times.'
The sign at the power line says 4x4 and Chains.. If you were going to drive to Calgary would you not carry chains.

From Dakotaridge.ca websiteFrom Dakotaridge.ca website
Alert / Warning Saturday, December 29, 2007

This warning has been on dakota website for some time.

'Warning! The Forestry Road climbs steeply to the ski area with snow and ice on the road. Snowplowing is done periodically. Chains, 4x4, and a shovel are recommended for the 2005-2006 season. Regular plowing and 2 wheel drive access will be in place for 2006-2007.'

Suggest you contact SCRD parks dept and suggest more signage required etc.
I have suggested more signs including a 30kmph speed limit. As this road is narrow and limited visabilty on corners.

# Diamond Back Premium European design tire chain.
# Square link alloy construction
# Diamond Pattern for excellent traction, smooth ride and long wear.
# SAE Class 'S' clearance
Click on picture to see better, These Chains are great for vehicles with limited clearance around wheels. You do not have to move to put on. They coil up in a small carry bag that you use to neal on when put them on.

Grooming was done yesterday on DakotaGrooming was done yesterday on Dakota
Current Conditions Sunday, December 30, 2007

Jim and other Volunteers groomed yesterday. They might be out today also. Please leave your dogs at home or atleast pooper scoop after them. Nothing worse then dog poop on bottom of new skis.
Recomneded heavily you put Chains on before going up hill. You might be the best driver but the other guy coming down without chains might cause you to hit ditch too.
Be smart and safer.

Dakota road looking GreatDakota road looking Great
Current Conditions Sunday, December 30, 2007

Somebody must be using chains, Snow boarders are pissed off. Using chains seems to wreck it for Snow Boarding. Seems to be fewer trucks in ditch today then others.
B&K and cross over road have deep compact snow. Had to pull couple of guys out that did not have chains etc. Almost at the Hairpin corner B&K side. 2-3 feet of compact snow. That is that you are driving on top of. 6feet snow on ground. If you dig in your truck can bottom out. Next time I go up to pull a 4x4 out up there I will charge $500. So if you go up there take cash I don't take Plastic.
